Daughter has mine - 7th B-day gift (1959). Fitted with a Lyman and a ramp, IT is capable of hitting the end of a soda can at ~ 80 yards every time - me, not so much, anymore.

[URL=http://s91.photobucket.com/user/3dtestify/media/IMG_4538_zpsfaveda49.jpg.html] [/URL My oldest is a late 1930's vintage unaltered Winchester Model 54 in .30-06 with a serial number in the 50,000 range. That makes this rifle one of the 218 remaining in stock after its discontinuation in 1936 & liquidated between 1937 to 1941. The scope is a late 1930's vintage Noske Hunter No.1 type'A' (2-1/2x) Fieldscope with a post reticle (courtesy of Mule Deer) and is mounted in a Stith "Install-it Yourself" Q.E.D. windage streamline mount.

Gotta keep the thread going... Here we have a 1933 Savage 99RS in 300 Savage. This is an early 99RS, which Savage designed with input from Col. Whelen and a couple others as to what features to include to make a premium hunting rifle. Those suggestions included the larger forearm compared to earlier schnabel tipped versions, a windage adjustable peep sight, factory sling studs and sling, and most of all "a barrel specially selected for accuracy" - whatever that might mean. The prewar 99RS was made from 1932 to 1941 and are few and far between, especially in good condition. Not many folks during the Great Depression had $71.50 to put towards a gun that wasn't going to be used. Writeup by Col. Whelen:
“ The Savage 99 Pocket Reference”. All models and variations of 1895’s, 1899’s and 99’s covered. Also dates, checkering, engraving.. Find at www.savagelevers.com

Romac, when time alows, could you supplement your posts about that fascinating Mauser combination gun with a few details on the lower (shotgun) barrel's lockwork / striker / firing mechanism.
Any links to further details on this design ?
Thanks,
GTC

GTC, We had fun with this back in 2012 (7/23/2012) when I first saw it. Just about everything I know about this gun is on this thread.
One interesting thing I remember though is that some company made a run of about 100 of these after WWII. I don't recall who though.

I have an aquaintence in town that has a nice 1888 that ihas been reworked into a takedown sporter. Best I remember it was a 7 x 57 too! Not near as cool as above 88 but a dandy nontheless.

I was given several rifles and shotguns by a dear friend before he passed away. This is his Savage 99 300 Sav. His wife bought his after he was discharged from the USAF in 1954 so he would have a deer rifle. I changed the mount and mounted the Leupold I had. High Brass had it on a M99 he bought from 6mm250. This is Bob's pride and joy "sweet thing". He had it built by a local gunsmith. It's a M98 Mauser .243 with a Douglas barrel and custom stock.

I always heard the story that after the war, them old world smiths were so hard up for chow and such, they would build rifles for cigarettes. Smokes being a form of specie when hard cash was scarce.
Correct me if I'm wrong gang! Just what I always heard from the old timers!

Yeah, GI's could get smokes for, like, a buck a carton at the PX and then a lot of them made it onto the black market via the GI's bartering them for goods like this. The value of a carton of Luckies on the black market would have fed a family of four for a week in post-war Berlin.
GI's bought all kinds of stuff, not just custom guns, and paid with smokes. Illegal as hell, but...

Krag porn! I regret that I didn't pick up a Krag rifle when they were fairly common on used gun racks in nice shape at reasonable prices back in the 1980s.
