Gentlemens,
Years ago, I inherited a 1899 Model, .300 Savage, take down model. If it matters, the serial is #2646xx. I believe the DOM is 1924. The current rear sight is a Marble popup peep. The flange on the Marble sight is tweaked where it's attached to the receiver. Possibly a result of the gun falling over and bending the sight sideways. A local gunsmith told me it couldn't be sufficiently un-tweaked and it wasn't original equipment anyway.

Two questions:
1. Was the Marble, in fact, an original accessory?
2. Is the rear dovetail sight available? (not a fan of the peep sight)

In my opinion, the gun is not in collectible condition. But it's unique (has the rotary magazine with round counter on the side of the receiver) and once belonged to my Great Grandfather. He used it to hunt deer and I'd like to resurrect it for the same purpose. I hear the 99's are pretty accurate.
Thanks for your help.

Original accessory? Maybe.

Factory original? No.

These were add-on's that were bought for the gun and you could order a 99 with a tang sight but they never came with them except for the 99K.

The rear sight is pretty common. If your rifle is a 99F or 99G it came with a flat top rear sight. We need more info, pictures would be best, to identify the model. David

The sight in the picture was on the tang of the gun. Can't see it in the photo but it's tweaked pretty good. I was looking for the sight that fits in the dovetail forward of the receiver.

I can post more pics if you tell me what you want specifically.

By rear sight I was referring to the one that fits the dovetail on the barrel just forward of the receiver.
The only picture I can open is the one of the Marble sight. There were four takedowns offered in 1924, they were the 99B, 99D, 99F and 99G. The B and D had relatively heavy barrels and the front sight was dovetailed into the barrel. The standard rear barrel sight on these rifles was a semi-buckhorn. The F and G had lightweight barrels with a ramp that was integral to the barrel and a blade sight pinned to the ramp. They had the flat top rear barrel sight. The G was checkered and had a capped pistol grip. The others were uncheckered and had a straight grip. David

Based on your description, I believe this is a 99F. It has an integral front sight and an uncheckered straight grip.

Do you have a picture of an original flat top sight? I've seen pics of similar 99's with a ramp type rear sight on the barrel. The Marbles peep on the tang is the only sight I've ever seen on the one in my possession.

Thank you for making your expertise available. Much appreciated!

Figure 5-5, page 61 of my book, "A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99 Rifle and its Predecessors the Model 1895 and 1899". I am currently running a Christmas special on the book for $56.99 including shipping. You might want to get a copy if you plan to get deeply into collecting 99's. I can throw in a 2017 Savage 99 calendar for an additional $22. The calendars will be available late next week. This offer applies for all forum members.
