Finally decided to drag out my Model 700 Light Tactical in 308 with a 20 inch barrel, and 1-10 twist. I've gotten decent results with the 155 grain Amax bullet, but have got some 168 SMK I want to try. Just wonder if anyone else has got the same setup, and if you do, what are some favorite loads.

And just a thunk, were a guy wanting to find a decent 308 load, I'd likely check the 'Good 308 Loads' thread at the top of the page.

Over 500 posts and I'll betcha one of them will tickle your fancy.

Here's my shortcut;

Any 165-168gr bullet

44.5gr IMR-4064

Any Large Rifle Primer.

Works great in four different .308 Win rifles.

YMMV

Thanks....got the powder, the bullets, and plenty of primers. I'll give it a try. Most of the load data that I've found has been for 1-12 twist rate, and a longer barrel. Not sure how big a difference it will make, but I know that it sometimes will be different.

I've had 308's with 18.5, 19, 20, 22, 24 and 28" barrels.

There's no "magic" loads for a short barrel vs. long barrel. Personally, I think the 308 is all about 165/168 bullets. I'd start there with Varget, and work up to 46.0 gr's. The 165 Hdy BTSP is typically a wicked accurate bullet in the 308, and it will kill any BG animal hunted with a 308.

For the bullets you've mentioned the difference between 10" and 12" twists amounts to nothing.

Before you make up a batch of a load someone recommends make sure you're using the same brass. 308 brass varies in weight and capacity a good bit across types, with Lake City on the heavy end near 180 grains and WW on the light end around 155.

Loaded up some R-P brass with 168 grain Sierra HP's and 45 grains Varget. Inch and half 3 shot group at 300 yards. Not bad for me, as everything is all factory. Need to put a better trigger on the rifle, and I'll be happy.

Different bullet, good for WT's, etc. Works on hogs, too.

135 gr. Cutting Edge Raptor. Petals fly off, core bores on thru, sorta like the mono version of a Partition.

It's longer than a 155 gr. Scenar, same length as a 185 gr. VLD.

Not sure if the OP is clanging steel, cutting holes in targets or filling his freezer. The latter option, perfect job for the Raptor.

This group at a hundred yds. out of a 23" SS Broughton 5C/Kimber Classic.

I'll probably stick to steel and paper with this rifle. I've shot it enough to find out that it likes the heavier bullets, and for what I intend on doing, that works for me.
