Has anyone tried this combination yet?

My current favorite load with the 6.5x55 and the 129g Hornady SP is with Reloder 22. I don't love the POI and velocity changes with temperature swings with this combination however. I'm wondering what kind of accuracy you may have had with this combo and if you've tested it in widely varying conditions?

If you've tried Reloder 23 in similar cartridges what has it shown with regards to it's temperature resistance?

Thanks for any feedback you may have.

Oh, and I asked Alliant if they had any load data for this combo.

Alliant has no tested data for this Hornady bullet and powder combination.
I will submit your request to the engineering lab for possible future development. But, there is no timetable as to when this may be looked at for development.
Thanks

Azar,

Tried 23 with 140's in the .260 Remington, and the load acted very similarly at zero F. as it did at 70 degrees. In fact it gained about 30 fps velocity at zero, and POI remained the same at 100 yards.

Excellent! That's good to hear. The 6.5x55 and .260 are close enough that hopefully there will be some correlation between the two with regards to temp. resistance.

Do you have any comparisons velocity-wise when compared against Reloder 22 in the same application?

Nope, but have used enough 22 in the 6.5x55 to be reasonably sure both powders produce about the same velocity.

Hornady's response when requesting any load data they might have:

So no data from either bullet or powder manufacturer. I did get a data update for QuickLOAD in December, but I don't like relying on it as the only source of load data.

For those that have used Reloder 22 & 23, how similar are the charge weights? I believe I've read that 23 tends to run a bit faster than 22. What experiences have you had?

Last week I loaded up 10 rounds, 1 charge each from 44.6g to 50.0g in 0.6g increments. The last 3 charges filled the case quite full. In fact, I loaded cases more full than I ever have before. The 48.8 grain charge looked like it was just below the neck, the 49.4g charge was into the neck, and the 50.0g charge was about 1/2 up the neck. I decided to load them anyway. crazy

The rifle in question is a modern actioned CZ 550 American. I tested fired the rounds on Saturday over a Shooting Chrony Beta Master chronograph watching velocities, for signs of brass fatigue, and difficult extraction or hard bolt lift.

Here are the results:
44.6g 2,685 fps
45.2g 2,739 fps
45.8g 2,781 fps
46.4g 2,805 fps
47.0g 2,855 fps
47.6g 2,895 fps
48.2g 2,926 fps
48.8g 2,975 fps
49.4g 3,020 fps
50.0g 3,036 fps

I thought about stopping at the 47.6g load since the velocity for that load was for the predicted C.I.P. max pressure for the 6.5x55. I decided to keep going as long as bolt lift was okay and brass looked normal since this was a strong, modern Mauser action. All brass extracted easily with no noticeable increase in difficulty of bolt lift. Brass didn't show any obvious signs of gross over pressure. In fact, you couldn't eyeball any difference in brass between the 44.6 and 50.0g loads. Velocities, however, were getting quite high. I started pushing into .270 Winchester territory. blush

Here is an adjusted QuickLOAD guesstimate where it matches velocity readings decently in the mid-range of charges:

USE THIS DATA AT YOUR OWN RISK.

QuickLOAD's updated guesstimate puts me in the 66k+ range for the 50.0 load. Estimated to be over pressure by either SAAMI or C.I.P standards by a fair bit and pushing beyond reasonable limits of a modern actioned firearm. At least, if QuickLOADs calculated pressure is to be believed.

In any case I now feel like I have a better idea of what this powder will do with a 129/130g bullet in the 6.5x55.

That's great stuff. Haven't used any 23 yet, but I may give it a shot..
