Interesting. I mainly use coon cuffs, which they can't get to their foot when caught.
Maybe that's why I have never seen one chewing on itself. 99% of the time, they're just laying there nice and calm waiting for me to arrive.

6 foxes in 36 years did this in your experience and now you must check in the morning or it will chew it's leg off by the afternoon. Really???????
Sounds like the chewing in your experience is actually quite a rare thing to happen.

contrary to studs vast 'experience', I've never even had one nibble on a leg above the trap jaws, even when caught for a week in subfreezing weather....
That's my experience although I've only caught a dozen or so Coon. Of that dozen two chewed their feet but neither was above the trap.

A fox caught the night before will chew his leg off before you get there in the afternoon or evening, so yeah, they need to be run in the morning IMO. Could be, but.... When I trapped in my school years, I could only check traps in the afternoon during the week. Never once did I have a critter chew a foot off. Fox caught by just a couple toes, there waiting for me. Exact same from me.

If your traps are out of sight there is no harm is checking in the evening.
I have never seen a coyote or fox try to chew above or below the jaw.
Coon will chew below if the circulation is cut off. That doesn't seem to be a problem with laminated traps.
However they will twist out, so important to use a couple swivels and keep the trap clear of obstructions they can climb or get hung up in.

Here in Sweden we are obliged to check traps that doesn't kill the animal twice a day.

I've had coons in my dog proofs get eaten by other animals twice last year out of the same trap, in the same week. Just the front shoulder left, never found out what ate them. Made me nervous about walking to my stand before daylight, dp's are near my feeders.
