Stopped at Cabelas the other day and was checking out the used gun rack and a pre-64 Fwt caught my eye. It was an early 50's vintage 308. The condition was great. Even had factory swivels and front sight hood. The price was fair. I wasnt looking to add a 308 to my collection but the gun was just too nice. So made a low ball offer, figured what the heck. And they accepted! The offer was $350 below asking $. To say I was pleased is an understatement.

Thanks guys. The 308 is such a ,well, "reliable round". Not much of a challenge finding an accurate load.
The out building was totally improvised, it's a combo garden shed, wood shed and dog kennel. Just finished it a couple months ago. It's nice having dry snow free wood.

Congrats! I love finding gems in the gun library. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/11706947/1 I'm surprised they took your offer, it's never worked for me.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

I was going to say, that is a damn nifty looking wood shed too. I was wondering if it were a combo something like a chicken coop or dog kennel. Looks great...

Nice rifle and sounds like a good deal.
Some don't like the Pre64 FW .308W because of the long action. I think they are an almost perfect compromise between weight and recoil.

Since you want to bring this up again battue, the 30-06 is the best compromise between lightweight and recoil. Funny thing is the 308 has more metal in it, which actually makes them heavier than an 06. I tried the 308, but just didn't care for it at all... The OP's rifle looks like a beauty though..

Well if I've made a habit of being the .308W cheerleader for the pre 64 FWT 70, so be it. You know I have one and I know I like it more than a little. The extra weight is non-consequential for me. The recoil difference between the two .30-06 pre 64's I have and the classic sporter .30-06-which is also a pretty nice rifle-is noticeable from the bench. Obviously not in the field, but I shoot them more from the bench and there is nothing I would shoot with a .30-06 that I wouldn't with a .308W. I really like all of them in .30-06, but I don't consider them to be the best compromise.
You have also mentioned more than once you don't care for the .308W and that's fine also. Nothing more than individual preference.

Sweet find irfubar! An all time favorite cartridge of mine!
I am currently assembling parts for a 6.5/284 on a SS Pushed 70 as longer range set-up. I've only seen one other SS PF 70, so I am excited to put this one to good use!

Had my circa 1996 SS M70 308 Fwt out last weekend for its first range session... it will get open sights later this spring/summer:

The 308 makes a lot of sense. It is a practical thinkin mans cartridge. I understand the argument of a short round in a long action etc... The 308 isn't glamorous, the truth is it's a great performer. This coming from a 270 guy.

The Weaver's are practical, light, strong, and get the scope lower on an M70 Classic than any other mount. They're mounts for working rifles, not show rifles.
BTW Irfubar, meant to compliment you on your beautiful 308 Fwt... also really like your woodshed in the background. Nice all around!
