Dave Clements said 220 gr @ 1200 f/s would be fine in the GP. I've never had a reason to go beyond 230 cast @ 900-1000. It does everything I want to do with this platform.

I like the 41 mag a lot and have 3 of them. Like you I can't see the point of a 41 special.

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I rassled with that a long time, but am somewhat of a convert. better load density, could be used in a lighter vehicle than an N frame, kind of reminds me of the original one, a .41colt.
but i cast bullets from the 170grain up to about 270grain for 41, it works real good with those 170grain hollow points. And it works good with some of the .41's that have shorter cylinders.

JWP, like Ron, I see a Special fitting a short cylinder handily. I had a Taurus Tracker 41, was minimal on COL.

FWIW, I do love the 41M - tolerable recoil and handles game here in the south w/o issue. No doubt a good heavy SWC at even 1000 fps will do fine at modest woods ranges.

i fired a few cylinders of the 429421 240gr something this weekend out of a 3inch 629. 10grains of hp38, and while not chron'd i think somewhere around 1200fps.
it wasn't objectionable to me but i did notice the blast etc when fired.
what i am gonna do is this:
two revolvers a 629 three inch
a 657 three inch

44 special
41 special
using approximately same weight bullet
powder specific to the caliber
and i am going to chrony both of them and as a comparison
to recoil, blast, etc.
I was commenting on the revolver a have more than one 44, and i tend to download or use 44special in them, just like i do in 41magnum.
the point of it is that a fellow there had a 624 six inch, and my comment was i think it would do most anything one wanted to do even getting into lite 44magnum territory.
but without the blast, etc.

10 grains of Winchester 231 (HP38 labeled by Winchester) with a 200 grain bullet is in the 1100 area for a 4". It is the load I use to duplicate the Speer Short Barrel Load for my Mountain Gun.

If you want to compare apples to apples try bullets with the same sectional density per caliber vs. weight.

.410/170/.143
.429/180/.140

.410/210/.178
.429/225/.174

.410/230/.195
.429/250/.194

.410/265/.224
.429/290/.225

Love the .41 Special brass for the Taurus Trackers with their short cylinders...makes for much more positive ejection...
