Does anyone know what a #3 fluted would weigh at 22"? What caliber? I now that can sure make a difference in weight. Bartlein website says 3.5 lbs for a #3. Not an exact comparison but might help as an example. I just had 2 rifles built using the 2b contour, both finished @ 22.5" and both with 3/4" shanks. Everything is pretty much the same as far as parts, one barrel is fluted and one isn't. The non fluted rifle is a 7MM-08, the fluted is a .243. The .243 actually weighs a little more than the 08. So knowing the caliber might help guestimate the overall weight. But like others have said, the rifle will likely be a bit muzzle heavy - not much but a little which is not a bad thing IMHO.

OP contact Bartlein for weight. Fwiw I had two 260s. Unfluted. 23 and 24"
Would do 21-22 max in any standard non mag round. What are you building?
Personally would flute a 3 or use a round 2B or 2 for a sporter.
My 6.5L was 22 or 22.5 in Light Palma. Later had cut to 20 and fluted. Really love it but it's double duty for range work and stand hunting.
20-22" is a sweet spot for me. 23 or longer would be for larger capacity rounds in lighter contours. Just MY preference.
Re build weight and balance. All add ons matter. Stock. Scope. Mounts. Bottom metal or not. Etc.

I contacted bartlein about the weight and the guy I talked to wasn't real sure on weight but said it should be just under 3 pounds. 2.8-2.9 fluted at 22".

That's about where I want to be with weight. If I can stay under 8# I'll be happy. If it's a touch over I'll live with it.

It will be in a 26oz manners eh-6 if that helps. Haven't decided on scope yet but it will be under 16oz either way I go and resting in a set of talley light weights.

You'll be where you want then. I have a 2b 22.75" w/ 3/4" shank in an eh6 and 20 ounce scope in talleys, right at 8 pounds. Mine is a 260, so the fluting, larger bore and lighter scope should make up for the #3.

My 7MM-08 with the non-fluted 2b sits in a Classic Edge, Talley Lwt rings and a not fancy Leupold 3x9x40 scope and weighs 7 lbs 5 ozs. So adding a few ozs for the bigger contour barrel should get you under your target weight of 8 lbs if not going with a heavier scope. Should be a nice rig!!

Oregonmuley you don't happen to know what your McMillan weighs do you? Also up for suggestions on a good scope. I mainly hunt in the woods on the east coast but I have some plans to hunt mule deer and pronghorn out west.

Both of my Classic Edge stocks weighed 24 ozs. In regards to a good scope, I'm pretty low tech so not sure I could be helpful there. I hunt antelope every year in Wyoming and the Leupold Mark 2 3x9x40 with the Long Range duplex works well for me. I'm sure someone will chime in with some good suggestions.

What does your mark 2 weigh? Thanks for all the helpful info by the way.
Ive got a ton of leupolds From vx-IIs to mark 4s but I'm willing to consider other brands.

They weigh 12.3 ozs on my cheapo scale but think that should be about right. By the way great choice in going with the 7MM-08, I might be a bit biased since I have several but it makes for a great hunting rig. Here is the one I referenced in my earlier post, I've posted it before but its been awhile so here it is again:)

I have a 21" fluted #3 coming back from LRI in a few weeks. I'll report back on the weight.
The heathen 308 barrel weighs 1,699 grams (or 3.75 lbs in christian units).
