Getting near the edge, but I'm nominating the Violent Femmes.
The Violent Femmes are classic for sure but when I think punk rock, it really starts with Black Flag. The first album I ever bought was My War and as crappy as it may sound to some, this thread sure brings back memories! Black Flag aside, my favorite punk band was Agent Orange and I actually have Sonic Snake Session playing in the background now.
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!

Last fall next door to the salt mine. Funny co-inky-dink but just two days ago a buddy dropped off a VF t-shirt that was a thanks for my playing quick tour guide prior to the show for he and his GF.
Not for nothing, but there seem to be quite a few posters who have a very different definition of the punk genre than my own.
In what I'll guess was around 1980, while in London with my brother and Wee Muther, there was a large mob of punks gathered in Trafalgar Square. This was the first time I'd seen kids with safety pins through their cheeks and eyebrows and whatnot. Purple and red and pink mohawks and black leather and spiked dog collars stuff. That was punk.
Anyway, to me, you can't have a conversation about punk and not even make mention of this band. THIS is punk.
Also, the likes of the Ramones, the Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, later Gang Green...Anyway, rock on.
Sex Pistols were the first that came to my mind, next were the Clash.
One of my favorite bands from the era to be sure, and while I agree that The Clash has punk roots and soul, crossed over to a more mainstream rock and punk hybrid. But yeah, long live the music of those boys.

Leighton i saw her live i in Boston a couple yrs ago.
P.S. and edit: Garbage's music ain't anything even remotely close to being related to punk, you backwards south Texas hillbilly bastard. Can't even see punk from there, but it's OK I still love you.
Original punk is from England. The Ramones were garage punk, American style. Teenage Head was the CDN version of the Ramones. I saw TH live 6x.

The early Clash was vg pure punk but they later smoothed it out for a wider audience. Except for a couple sell out songs were excellent nonetheless. Saw the Clash once late in their run. Joe Strummer held it together. Saw Talking Heads once as well.

Ah, someone here actually knows what they're talking about.
