If you can get hold of the Winchester PDX1 ammo, try it out on coyotes.
I had the M.R. .22WMR with a heavy stainless barrel. Very accurate, trigger pull was a little heavy.

That Win 40 gr jacketed HP has always shot well for me. Bought a bunch at the White Elephant in Spokane about 15 years ago. Was $22.99 for a "five-pack" of 50 round boxes. Those were the days! Still have a stack of those mini-bricks around.

However, the WW 40 gr HP does have a tendency to ricochet. Seems that jacket is pretty substantial; probably why it works so well on bigger critters. (won't elaborate further, in interest avoiding the argument of what can and can't be dispatched with a small caliber bullet.)
A number of the places I shoot ground squirrels have cattle around. Even though I know my target alignment won't result in a leaky bovine, the sound of whizzing bullets often keeps my 22 WMR in the safe.

Happily them 17 gr 17HMR bullets solve that issue, are a bit more accurate and shoot flatter, as well as less expensive. Problem solved.

Daveinmt: Thank you for the tips/information.
I to have some "settled" areas that need to have Ground Squirrels eliminated and of recent (the last five years worth of shooting) the most ricochet proof round for me seems to be the 17 Mach2 using the Hornady V-Max load.
It seems to be less ricochet prone even than the 17 HMR shooting the same Hornady 17 grain V-Max type bullet (I believe its the same bullet?) - and that perception of mine puzzles me in that the increased velocity of the 17 HMR over the 17 Mach2 would lead one to believe that bullet would "disintegrate" more often/more reliably?
Just returned from a gun buying venture to Arizona and returned via the Gallatin Valley - beautiful there and saw some Gophers to boot.

WyoCoyoteHunter: I did buy some small gun related items but no guns - I saw some guns I would like to have owned but none in the price range I was willing to pay and then go through the hassle of legal transfer.
Did also buy a nice Remington Art Work books (The Art Of Remington Arms).
Did though enjoy the 8 days of 85 to 91 degree weather!
Once off the plane back in Bozeman it was back to wind, gray, sleet and snow!
Its been a LONG winter here in Montana!
I may just make that trip to "fresh lettuce country" (Arizona) a yearly thing it was so enjoyable?
