The old tang safety rifles had match barrels that would put most Kriegers to shame. Simply remove the pressure point in the barrel channel, glass bed the action and load some Sierras and you will be astounded.

Here are two groups I shot at 350 yards yesterday. Sierra GK 165 HPBT from my 80s 30-06 M77 tang safety.

I'm to ashamed to post pics of my 2 Hawkeye's groups..... Now the one MK II in 204 Ruger with its short flyweight barrel? It drives nails with 35r Berger HP's. I sold my 338RCM after Trigger job, MPI Stock, and a Re-crown. got her down to a very reliable 2-2.25MOA bench shooter. That and a SS/LAM 25-06 that shoots OK kinda has just turned me OFF to Ruger.

People who say Rugers won't shoot evidently don't own any....

or they are lousy shots... even with other brands of rifles...

I'll 3rd it. I have never been better than a 5/8ths Shooter from the Bench with any caliber or any of my guns. I have a hard time shooting much better than MOA at 400yds with them also. But I can consistantly make hits on one gallon milk jugs(water filled) to about ~450-475 from feild positions.

I have had some that would really shoot and some that were horrible..

A few years back I was takinga .338WM and .30-06 elk hunting. Both were Ruger MKII rifles with factory barrels. On my last trip to the range I checked zero at 100, then moved to the 600 yard range where I put up some clay pigeons. With a total of 5 shots I managed to break a clay with both rifles. Two shots with one, three with the other.

Many times I've posted photos of 100-yard targets I've shot with my Ruger rifles, including M77, MKII, MKII VT and Hawkeye variants. I won't bother here other than to say many showed 2- and 3-shots touching. My .257 Roberts did 3 (75g V-MAX) that went .232" center-to-center and my 7mm RM did 3 (160g North Fork SS) in .262" My .22-250 VT has done 4 (40g VMAX or BT, I forget which) in .5" at 200. The only Ruger I've had that wouldn't shoot was an American in .30-06.

All my Rugers have received homespun trigger jobs, except the VT, which came with a 2-stage target trigger. All have also bee floated if they didn't come that way.

I bought a used 1999 Ruger #1V 223 from CA off the internet in 2007 for $500 + $47 shipping and FFL.

I cleaned out the copper and took it to the range with some ground squirrel handloads, 15 gr Blue dot 35 gr Vmax, old once fired brass.

This is how the target looked at 100 yards.

Well I don't doubt you did shoot those groups at 350, however they must nearly be quite a fluke or else you have one of the most accurate rifles on the planet!

In any case you'd have to be well pleased.

What does it do with hunting bullets?

These were hunting bullets, 300WM/180g TSX. First shot from a cleaned/oiled bore. Ruger MKII boat paddle.


So were these, 7mm RM/140g North Fork SS. 10 shots total, 2 each at 0.5g increments of IMR7828SSC, Gusting 40+mph crosswinds. 1982 Ruger M77. Same rifle shot a .262" 3-shot group with North Fork 160g SS.


Varmints, anyone? 1984 Ruger M77, .257 Roberts/75g V-MAX.


Ruger MKII cobbled together from parts in 2010, boat paddle stock. After marking the first two shots I put a third in the group. 225g Hornady SST. It does the same thing with 225g Nosler AccuBond.


.257 Roberts again, this time wiht 115g TSX. Shots 1-2 were with scope zeroed for 75g V-MAX, shots 3-4 after a scope adjust.


1993 Ruger #1 .280Rem with 120g TTSX and 140g TTSX. sold the rifle because it was too nice to hunt with. Bought a synthetic-stocked Ruger Hawkeye i .280 Rem to replace it.

Here's one I've never shown before, the last scope-check for the Ruger Hawkeye .30-06 I gave to my latest son-in-law as a wedding present. It has a synthetic stock and a 20" barrel. The loads were white box 150g Winchester Power Point, nothing special. (Shots 1-2 were on a different target, these were after a scope adjust.)


No complaints with any of the Ruger M77/MKII/Hawkeye rifles i've worked with.

Oh yeah, care to answer why when Ruger offered and gave the US Palma team( you know what they shoot right?) free rifles, they found, IIRC, that 2 of 14 barely shot well enough to make the cut.....

I reviewed the Mark 11's when released and they shot very well to the point I tried additional rifles to confirm the results.

They have become a very good product.

I have two tangs- one in '06 with a 17 inch bbl (had to lop a few inches off to get rid of the unsightly muzzle bulge).. I bought it for $80. After tweaking (bedding, factory- trigger, free-floating, it will shoot as many as you want into 1.25 at 100. First thing I killed with it was a Dall ram at about 330 yards.It has killed literally tons of game.

After same tweaking, the .338, with certain hand loads will go MOA with the Hornady 250 RN, or inch at 200 with SGK 250 hand loads, neck sized, head spaced on the shoulder.

I just wish they would shoot.....

I've owned a bunch of Ruger tang safety 77's over the years. The worst was a .308 Win 77-RSI that wouldn't put three inside of 2" no matter what I tried. Then I discovered that the stock was cracked lengthwise under the action. Sent stock to Ruger, they sent a replacement. Instead of putting it on the action, I bought a Brown Precision Classic for it, bedded it, and shot it again. No joy! No improvement.
Then, I learned that you could spin the barrel off, ship the receiver to Ruger and have them put a new barrel on for less than $200.00. So I did, and it came back with a hammer forged barrel. Put that in the stock and it was now an honest 1MOA shooter that my SIL owns.

So, the moral of the story is, if your Ruger won't shoot, either you're a crappy shot or you need to send it back to Ruger and have them put a new tube on it.
As much as we would like it, Ruger still can't help it if you're a crappy shot.

I've had lousy shooting tang safety Rugers. The worst was one I wanted to love in the worst way. It had been slimmed down to a schnable fore end, and reamed to 250 AI. Oh how I wanted that rifle to shoot, but it simply would not.

I laughed at myself when I wrote that! I think I deserve some credit for an April fools joke lasting this long

My 77st 30/06 has about 5000 rounds through it. I took 5 rds of 1969 lake city match ammo out to my lasered 811 yard range. The first hit at bottom of the steel plate and a sight adjustment was made. The last 4 went into 8" group.

My 1976 tang safety 7mm RM has been glass bedded had a trigger job and a custom muzzle brake (gunsmithing was a surprise gift from the wife) and is the most accurate hunting rifle I've ever shot. 3 shot groups you could cover with a dime using 150 NBT are common at 100 yards. Killed a. Nice boar at 513 with holdover in a 15 mph crosswind. Tried it at 1000 yards with just holdover and no reference first shot missed the plate by 1' 3rd shot hit the 1'x2' steel. I have since put a conquest with Z600 reticle on it and 600 yard targets are routine for the old girl.

Dad's old 30-06 tanger is the opposite end of the accuracy spectrum - Softball sized groups with everything.
