circa 1976: It's interesting the old timer has a lot of modern attributes - the standard twist is 1 in 8.75", so it should be able to shoot relatively long VLD & similar bullets. And I note that Alliant shows the best velocities with Reloader 19 and Reloader 22, with 160's. And I have plenty of slow powders. Ruger's typical long throat allows a 162 ELD-x to touch the lands, and still have a decent amount of bullet seated in the neck. 168's and 175's presumably will do the same. Suggestions on pet loads are appreciated

My Red pad long throat #1 7 X 57 shoots very well with most 140 to 175 gr bullets. About 1.5" better with best loads.

Nice rifle sir. Every now and then I see a nice #1 with a stock like yours, but always a 30-06 or 7RM, never a 7X57, 257R, or a 22-250...

Very nice, man! But what's with "vintage" and "old timer" when talking about something as new as 1976?

I like that vintage myself.
1976 was 40 yrs ago now. Much has come & gone in 2 score.
Congrats even tho I'm jealous. I'd be just as happy with a 7 mag.

I would try IMR/H-4350 and H-4831 with the 160-175 gr weight of bullets.
Nice Ruger No.1,Tex.

Very nice, man! But what's with "vintage" and "old timer" when talking about something as new as 1976? Exactly. To someone born in say, 1952, 1976 seems like only yesterday. Good luck with that thing. The one of similar vintage I had would't put three shots in a group, even with the forend removed. With wood like yours has, I probably wouldn't care. That rifle fairly screams for one of those Custom Shop 3 powers.

I looked in the bore with my Hawkeye - if it was ever fired, then someone did utterly meticulous job of cleaning it, as there is zero, and I mean zero powder or copper residue in the bore. The rifling seems well formed & consistent, though there are plenty of reamer marks in it. This may be one that shoots well after fire lapping, though I think I will Ultra Bore coat it and then try it as is.

A beauty and it will probably shoot even though it may be from the Wilson barrel era. I would look into R26 as a possibility it is doing well for me in the 6.5x55 and 270 W close siblings to the 7x57. With a long throated chamber, a modern action, and a 26 inch barrel you will have no need for a 280 you will be so close to one in velocities. R26 may surprise you to the point you will doubt your chronograph.

#1A - 22" barrel
I have some Reloader 22 & 23 so I'm thinking they'll be a good first bet with 162's, at least to start.

great rifle, great cartridge but not an old timer. I don't consider myself to be an "old timer" and I'm a lot older than that rifle (though my condition and appearance isn't nearly so nice). GD

Nice when I saw it I had to go check my safe because I thought how did that guy get his hands on my rifle. My buddy has taken a couple of deer with this rifle, I haven't blooded it yet. Bullet of choice is the hornady 154gr round nose at moderate velocities. Groups are golf ball sized. It's the 2 nd 7x57 1A I have owned.
