Read an article the other day that figured the whole damn mess is about 2 pipelines. One supported by the Saudis and one supported by Russia and the Iranians.
Until Assad is gone, our buddies the Saudis cant run their Qatar pipeline through Syria.
Sounds like the sanctions against Iran were intended to screw up their pipeline project.

Obama's War foisted upon a different president??? Not really. The services always plan for the "what if" scenarios; that is, the most likely areas of operations.
