Planning to hit the range next weekend with Daughter #1, her significant other (T) and his father (J). All the father has is a .30-06 and he has never shot past 100 yards. Promised him we would start at 100 for zero and chrono and them get him shooting at much longer ranges.
Found I was short on target ammo so more loaded up yesterday - .243 Win, .280 Rem, .338WM. Next will be some .308 for Daughter #1 and some in .30-06 for myself.
Looking forward to banging steel at 600 with all of them.
Except the -06, of course, which is obsolete. (laughing)

Now that the 30-06 is obsolete, I have to have one. Almost everything I have is unusual or obsolete.
Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

It's funny when you look at it from a timing perspective. The 30-06 is one of those cartridges most can agree is one of the better all around cartridges available. Now, assume it wasn't introduced when it was and instead was introduced this year, half of the rifle "loonies" around would be saying "why do we need that"? along with the moronic "won't kill any deader" and similarly moronic "animal won't know the difference" ad infinitum. The other half would be proclaiming it to be the best thing to hit the rifle scene since the 7X57. S P O T on. ... !! Jerry

It wouldn't have any claim to fame - not the fastest, won't fit an AR15 or AR10, too much recoil for some and not enough power for others, isn't optimized for sub-sonics or SBRs, lower bullet B.C. than other options, etc., etc. The complaints would be endless. Of course the selection today would be much different as there would be no .25-06, 6.5-06, .270 Win, .280 Rem, .338-06, .35 Whelen and others. And we wouldn't be calling it the .30-06. Maybe the .30-17?

Expat I'm surprised an 'outfitter' made the statement altho there are all kinds of 'outfitters'.
I would expect that statement from 'behind the counter' salesmen. I expect other caliber rifles are out selling the 06 these days, especially considering the black rifle frenzy.
Just because the 06 is old, it's a long way from obsolescent. (IMO)
Jerry I don't disagree with you Jerry. I love the .30-06. My elk rifle is an old tang safety Ruger M77 .30-06. A Tikka T3 Lite .243 has deer duty these days though. Expat

I've had on & off again relationship with the 06. At one time I had 5 and then went some yrs w/o one. I have a Rem M Six in 06 that I hunted and killed a couple of bucks w/last season.
All along I respected the 06 for its long history and success in the game fields. In the not too distant past I was even more impressed when 458 Win (Mr Phil) rated it (with appropriate bullets) a reliable round for Alaska Brown Bear. That says A LOT as far as I'm concerned.
One thing I never lost sight of is the availability of ammo everywhere even in Africa. There are reasons for that..
Sometimes people are short sighted or have a narrow field of view. The 06 certainly is not "all the rage" today and is overlooked or ignored for the new 'sensational' (popular) rounds.
Nonetheless, the 06 is just as lethal and dependable as ever, maybe more so due to better powders & bullets.
Obsolete-----not even close.

Funny how the venerable '06 is obsolete, but guys still kill a lot of deer with muzzleloaders shooting black powder and patched round balls. The stick and string hunters obviously never got the message either.

It's not new, sexy, or all the rage, so it's obsolete, eh? It's just boringly effective. I wonder how many Japs or Krauts thought it was obsolete.

And I'll take performance in a rifle over sexy any day.
We sure have seen a bunch of "new and improved" (and sexy) stuff hit the racks in recent years..... and already become obsolete. Kind of hard not to stick with the steadfast and reliable one. That's why I had a 7X57 built. I didn't want that new-fangled flash-in-the-pan .30-06!

Come to think about it. I use black powder with a patched round ball exclusively in my 54 cal Hawken, a 30-06, 348 Winchester and a 308 Norma Mag! Does this mean....?

The 30-06 is obsolete to the exact degree that Hillery Clinton loves the US Constitution, and is honest.

Now that the Internet has made gun magazines obsolete. What do I do with those piles of old magazines?
I like to do my hunting BEFORE I pull the trigger! There is only one kind of dead, but there are many different kinds of wounded.

Sure it's obsolete. It's real useful to obsolete an animal from running around so much, and into the freezer.

Theres reliable and then theres reliable. Hence why Phil as a guide prefers to carry a .458win and has been doing that consistently for some decades.

A while back, I was on a moose hunt up in Manitoba, Canada. The outfitter asked me "what are you using?", I told him a 30-06. He then said "good luck!", I asked him why? He said "the 30-06 is obsolete!" I obliged him with a good laugh and then later, a dead moose. It was the only hunt I went on with this guy. It's amazing what a great "obsolete" cartridge the 30-06 still is! And everything I've ever killed with it is still dead! Sometimes I stray from it, but it's never far away. "Obsolete" is a subjective designation but I think most shooters and hunters would strongly disagree with the guide. Those that don't are, well that would be a subjective designation as well...

Most modern, up to date, rifleman consider the 30-06 with a 4x scope a primitive weapon. Although most have never given it a fair trial.
And I'll take performance in a rifle over sexy any day. 458, You just described my wife's rifle - 30-06 w/ 4x scope. Guess I need to give her the bad news that her rifle is obsolete.
