Maverick, the first advice is, heed the speed limit at the reserve outside Fort Frances. It's a slow time for a while, but it beats a ticket, and it is native police.
Do you have your own boat, and how big is it? I've always wanted to fish Rainy lake, easy launches there.

Haven't been on a fly in for many many years. What I have found is those somewhat secret portage lakes where you walk in or get there with an ATV. Four years ago my rich neighbor and I walked into just such a lake. In six hours time, we caught twenty northerns and forty walleyes. It was on this 100 yard portage that I discovered you really can be covered in mosquitoes from head to toe.
So how do you find these lakes? Google Earth is a good starting point, along with a copy of Back Country Navigator running on an old Android deice. Using Canadian Topo maps in Back Country Navigator you can find roads that you didn't know were there and portages that often times haven't been used in years.
Works for me.

A rig tree branch scratches don't bother you on helps as well! I've seen trailers made for fourwheelers, quad, that carry a small boat on the side. Easier to get between trees. What a fellow won't do for some fish.

We fly in every year to a lake in northern SK. I have portaged in before. Only about 20 miles from the nearest road. You could not get to the lake via atv and I don't think you could do it afoot, unless you did some swimming.
The experience is great, especially when taking my kid in to something few have the opportunity to experience. We are just planning our trip for next week and rethinking some of the things we do. Trying to figure out how to better experience the area. Explore other lakes more. Considering investing in a much light canoe and portage out of our lake more.
