Looking for ideas on what to do with some elk ivories I have collected over the years. I have 16 from 8 elk. Any ideas from the elk brain trust here on what you've done with yours, etc? Thanks, Gents.

I gave all of mine, a couple of dozen or so, to my sister, who used to make Cowboy Action Shooting clothing. She used them for buttons- look very cool.

Mine are in a jar. I wish I could do something with em, but jewelry is about the only option and I'm not paying the prices jewelers are asking.

Cuff links and tie tacks as a matching set look great with Elk Ivories.

I drill a hole through near the base then sew them onto the ends of my slings for strap stops. Cut the end fold open, place the ivory, and stitch shut - looks best if you can blind stitch. If it weren't such a pain to post and image.

I can't remember the last time I wore a shirt with cuff links, and I am not at all sure when I last wore a tie, much less one with a tie tac. blush

I'm right there with you.
A time or two I have seen ivories in nicely done western belt buckles, but many more times I have seen belt buckles with ivories that I do not care for.

My wife is not into big gaudy jewelry. I had a jewler cut the tips out of a pair of ivories, about like cutting a pea in half, and set them in silver studs for ear rings. Also had two small tear drop shapes cut out and inlaid in a silver toggle bracelet. That turned out really cool. I also did a small round flat pendant with an ivory that was cut. Jewlers can do awesome stuff, and it really looks classy if you keep it small. Elk ivories are like turquoise. Less is more.

Had a pair of earnings made of my wife, with an old bull's.
Beautiful carmel color and worn down to the gum line.

I'm not a part of the elk brain trust, having never hunted wapiti, but here's an idea: ZIPPER PULLS.

You don't need to use rawhide. You can use paracord with the inside strands pulled out. There are various ways to attach the cord.

I stopped pulling them out a while ago. I don't wear jewelry and my wife and daughter are more into diamonds and pearls than elk teeth.

I keep mine in three or four 5-gallon buckets out in the barn. More of a nuisance, really.

I killed my first elk when I was 10-12 years old, I don't recall exactly. My grandfather drilled a hole in the teeth, put them, on a short piece of ceiling fan pull cord for me. They have stayed in my hunting bag for nearly 20 years as "good luck" and have been with be on probably 30-40 big game harvests, if not more in that time frame.

I take one of last years ivories and drill a hole in the root end and then slip a small leather string through it. I wear it around my neck as a talisman for next years hunt. Seems to work most years. I might just be superstitious though... I also like to eat a meal the evening before the hunt with last years elk in it.

I'm sure he means the small 5 gallon buckets, not the large 5 gallon buckets grin

I have 38 sets of bull ivories and they wouldn't fill up a "small" one gallon bucket.

as the saying goes, you can't believe every thing you read on the internet. However, it seems that there's still no shortage of people that do.

On a whim, I drilled a hole in a large one and threaded it on a key ring. It really shined up from riding in my pocket.

My son in law is a western jewelry maker and has made some gorgeous belt buckles with ivories.
