Finished off the triple this morning. Not much of a story like so many hunts, just got lucky and walked right under them in the dark. Only tree called once and never made another peep. The bird I got less than a mile from my house, the buck and bear were on our property in warren county. Been quite a year!

Good job! Not many people in PA can say they've ever pulled that off in the same year!

Dad always said he only needed an 870 12 ga. and a 760 in 30-06 for anything in North America. Looks like you proved him right again. Congrats!

I killed the bear with a browning 71 but the 760 would have been more than capable. I have a lot of rifles of varying caliber but only one shotgun and it has killed truckloads of critters over the years. Of all my guns to be passed down, probably the least $ value but the most sentimental as it was given to me by my father at 16 and works just as well today as it did then.

WAY TO GO!
Great accomplishment! And two of the three from your own land.
Glad for you
Jim

Well done and not many get all three in one year.

Pa stopped the "Triple Trophy" program years ago. Some enlightened members of the GC, for some reason felt giving a trophy patch and officially recognizing the accomplishment would misrepresent the purity of the hunt. It would look like getting a trophy was why we hunted. Yet they have a book for measuring Bucks and publish it every couple years. Then they brag-up weights of the really big Bears. Work on that one and make sense of it.

Well the fact remains there were a few who were finding ways to win that award.
Unenlightened as they are, the PGC was apparently enlightened enough to ultimately figure that out.
I knew a guy who won it twice, but he didn't bother again after they stopped the award, go figure.

That will always be the case with those few who want undeserved recognition. If a few shoot game illegally, should that be reason to deny the opportunity for others to participate legally? No, obviously. Therefore, I see it as little reason to deny those who have accomplished the task legally.

In addition, if I remember correctly and I do, that was not their stated reason for discontinuation. And in addition two, part of their job description is case work on violations.

Put dedicated effort into it and one should be able to be successful. Bear is the toughie, but there are people who specialize in it that are often successful.

When the triple trophy was initiated the Bear kill was in the neighborhood of 300 per year. Now it is 3000 plus. At the time Turkeys were not all that common and the few there were lived almost exclusively in the big woods of the Northern Tier. Seeing a Turkey was not all that common. Now they are almost everywhere. They have been know to walk up Fifth Ave in Oakland.

The only change that has made it more difficult is the antler restrictions but we don't want to get into that 12 pages worth of discussion/argument/3rd grade name calling cluster. The bear was a really cool trophy but to be honest I have little desire to shoot another. If I knew I had a trophy sized boar in front of me he would be in deep trouble but otherwise that's itch has been scratched for the time being. Turkey hunting will always be on my list and I look forward to rifle season every year, that too is changing with my sons beginning to hunt. Would rather see them tak a shot than anything else.
