Kiwi, your 99-F (?) was made around November, 1925, (per another lettered rifle less than 50 numbers earlier) which was more than 10 years prior to Savage scope offerings so side mount was added later. The question of the double proof marks is interesting. The earliest proof marked 99 I have seen is in the 298xxx (1927) range. The proof was only stamped on the barrel. The only double proof marked 99 I have seen appeared to have been back to the factory for re-barreling but given the letter you have posted it might indicate export to NZ or British areas.

As a note, the letter posted about proof marking is for the Models 3 and 4 which are .22's and from 1935. So, don't know when the export proofing started and if it was the same for center fires. I don't think Savage proof stamped their .22 caliber firearms if not exported so this is a new and interesting piece of the Savage puzzle. Thanks for posting.

Wyo1895, with the rifle produced in 1940, the Weaver 330 production starting in 1938 and the T-7 mount starting in 1939 it is possible that your setup could be factory. But as you know, there is no info in the log books from this time period so no way to verify.

Most rifles I have seen have a scope and/or mount that was a later production than the rifle. The first side mount used was the S-7 which was available 1934 through 1938 till the T-7 change in 1939. I have seen very few S-7 mounts compared to T-7's.

It's long gone but I had an EG with the sidemount screw holes. The serial number placed it produced in 1942. Do you know if they were still equipping them that way in '42. When I bought it it had a Stith mount and an early K2.5 scope. David

No catalogs for 1942 afaik. Might have been still offered by the factory, or might not have been.

Could have been leftover Weaver parts. The fact that it had a 1946 to 48 vintage Weaver made me think it may have had a T7 when it left the factory and was then updated as soon as the K-series scopes came out. I should have kept it but I can't keep them all. David

The war started sucking up the Weaver 330 for sniper use around 1942. Maybe late of the side mounts.

Sorry Rick the earliest invoice is 1927 and states tested & proof Marked

Another Q I also have some Stevens invoices
the 1935 header is J Stevens Arms Company Manufacturers of Shot-Gun, Rifles, Pistols,
the 1937 header is J Stevens Arms Company Division Of Savage Arms Corporation Shot-guns, Rifles

My understanding was that Savage purchased Stevens in 1920 but it took them until approx 1936 to change their invoice header?

Graham, When Savage first purchased Steven's they ran them almost like an separate company. In 1920 dated material I have there is no mention of the change in ownership, just notes or counter-stamping to show that the export office address had changed (same address as Savage's). I don't have anything dated from 1921 & 22 but by 1923 they had added "Owned and Operated by Savage Arms Corporation". 1936 seems to be when they absorbed Steven's and made it just a division.

I took some photo's of the changes in the names from 1920 to 1936... but at the moment Photobucket is hanging up on me so I will add them late (if it starts working again!).

The pictures fianlly loaded but are not in order - here is a link - Steven's 1920 - 1935

Here are examples of the changes made by Savage in the same time period -
