My Dad and I hunted together within the Black Hills Nat'l Forest of western South Dakota, First morning, he knocked down this young doe with his .243 rifle while walking slowly to his stand. This rifle is a true featherweight but shoots amazing groups at 100 yards. His previous rifle was an older 300 Savage levergun but he bought the .243 for its light weight. However Dad developed a serious heart condition about six months after our hunt together and never hunted again. He died of congestive heart failure. We miss him greatly. Sherwood

Thank for sharing the memories. In the end, that is all we have.
Two of my close friends now carry the same gun in same caliber for the same reason. The 243 surprised me, it is very effective. The H&R was not a surprise, I been a big fan for many years. Great little guns, shot, slug and rifle. I see both Henry and Savage have plans to sell similar guns. That will fill the void created by the Remington debacle. The Henry will include rifles. The savage is more of an exact copy of the H&R and is being introduced as a shotgun.

Great pic. We seldom get a chance to hunt in that kind of weather here, at least for deer. My last opportunity was in 2013, and I got a nice doe with my caplock TC in the last hour of the last day. Long drag in the dark, alone, and in a driving snow and sleet storm. Great fun.
You're lucky to have had a Dad worth missing.
What fresh Hell is this?

Brings back a lot of memories. Used to hunt whitetails there with my late father-in-law. Always had snow and a heavy overcast, just like in your photo. Thanks for posting!

I wish I had, had the chance for a last hunt. Sorry for your loss. The memories will always be there.

Yes. We will all eventually reach that place. I still question whether I want to be aware of that fact or not?
