Hey fellas, which metal/riflesmith would you recommend to build up and checker the bolt release on a M70 in blued steel?

Just order one from Wisner's, they are done and very nice, fit right up also.

+1 on Wisners @ $59.00 they are more cost effective than having a 'smith fabricate one. I have Wisner bolt stops on all my M/70's.

As I read they only work on pre-64's. Does it take much to get one to work on a post-64 New Haven?

No go at Wisner's, only pre-64 for the bolt release.

WDEA- JKOB is right, they usually do fit either pre or post 64 Model 70's.

I was unhappy with the fit on one late New Haven short action, though. The Weisner's piece had a loose wobble when first installed. The bolt release needed to be ground by a gunsmith so it didn't hit the shroud, and the peg on which the release rotates was replaced with a larger one. I also had the checkering re-done. As delivered, the checkering was pretty thin.

The Weisner's bolt release is a huge improvement over the original. I'd suggest you order one and if it doesn't fit, talk with JKOB, or Redneck.

The Wisner is nice and I would say it's the best bet for most people. I do my own just because I like to. My motto has always been "It might not be great but it's mine". I like the design of the early Model 70 stops because all the stress is not taken by the pin so I would always retain the original on a pre-war or transition model. I don't know when they started cheaping out and not taking the load on an abutment in the receiver than the pin. GD

Couldn't you take a talley bolt stop release button and spot weld it on and run a checker file over it.

I believe this is one but I am not sure as I am not the original owner of the rifle.

That is not a Wisner bolt release.

I tried him but only found a Facebook Page for him which I didn't want to log into. Do you know if he makes a left hand New Haven version? And if so will he sell one or is it an in house item only?

I don't believe he sells them pre-made. I think he takes yours, welds it up then shapes and checkers it. I don't know what he charges for it.

This is correct. And he only does them on his customers' rifles as part of a build.

Thanks saved me a phone call and from bothering Mr. Penrod. Wish I could send the whole rifle to him but it just needs a few refinements not an entire re-do.

Not necessarily true, unless he's changed his stance recently.

I had him modify my left hand stainless Model 70 a couple years ago. He installed a new "Mauser style" stainless bolt hand and built up and checkered the bolt release lever. He did a great job! Wasn't cheap but us lefties are kinda used to paying extra for what we want. Want to say I paid about $100 for the bolt stop modification. I wouldn't hesitate to use him again; real nice guy and very talented.
