TALE OF TWO TOWNHALLS

Sen. Dan Sullivan hosted a townhall meeting in the Interior on May 12, which is something that the Indivisible Alaska group and all its protester look-alikes have been demanding since Donald Trump’s election to the White House.

But when Sullivan scheduled the meeting, the protesters were confused and started peppering the March on Fairbanks organizers with questions: What do we do? Do we protest?

Democratic Socialists of Anchorage thought so. They posted on Twitter: “dan sullivan is holding a town hall in north pole tomorrow. we’re hoping that backfires.” [sic]

March on Fairbanks took the higher road in answering the confused protesters. The group’s response on Facebook was:

“My answer is NO! We asked for a public conversation with his Fairbanks constituents and he is doing exactly what we asked. I know we are frustrated by the current political climate but this is an opportunity to go and voice your questions and concerns. Do it peacefully – do not give our Senators any reason to fear their constituents or avoid holding public meetings in the future. Get there early as I expect it will be crowded!”

Afterward, the group made no mention of its reaction to the Sullivan townhall, although liberals posted criticism that it was held in North Pole, rather than Fairbanks.

Poet Linda Schandelmeier of Indivisible Alaska was asked to introduce the senator, and when Sullivan explained to the crowd that Obamacare had hurt Alaskans more than any other group of Americans, the boos and hurled insults rang out, to the point where it was unclear if the townhall could continue.

The meeting, held at a church, was packed with progressives and raucous protesters, and in spite of March on Fairbanks’ pleas to not behave badly, many modeled themselves after the #resist protesters in the Lower 48.

But when the next day Sen. Lisa Murkowski held her townhall, the same group not only took multiple photos with her, but posted this paragraph on Facebook:

Today Senator Lisa Murkowski took time out of her crazy schedule to meet with March On Fairbanks. Everyone present got a chance to ask questions and comment the current political climate. Thank you Lisa – we appreciate you taking time with some of your #Fairbanks constituents! Thank you Trina Michele Bailey for working tirelessly to make this happen!!

They are also wanting to get rid of Young since he voted for the AHCA. This state isn't the same state I moved to in '89.

I sure as heck hope not. The damn liberals are infecting the earth and I, for one, am dog-tired of their asinine agenda.

Sadly I think it's a decade at the outset. Way too many gimme dats migrating to the state, and the state seems to be set on preventing the creation of decent private sector jobs at every turn.

you have a state with a population of 3 people

one works in private enterprise

one works for the gov't to redistribute wealth

one has his hand out.

how do you think the vote will go in the general election?

There are also a fair amount of people that are from here or have been here that bury their head in the sand. Or they don't care enough to even get off their ass to vote, much less send an email to an elected official.

This is exactly correct. Many are transplants from Progressive/Liberal states that move to AK, TX, WY or other tax advantageous states in order to escape onerous taxation and liberal government policy that has ruined their city/state. The problem is that they bring their moronic liberal mindset with them and vote for the same idiotic policies that drove them from their states in the first place, and they slowly ruin their new city/state for everyone else. This is also one of the primary reasons we have the gigantic illegal alien problem in the U.S. They come here knowing full well that free healthcare, free education, free food (SNAP), free housing, etc. are theirs for the taking. The U.S. was even advertising these benefits in Mexico for Pete’s sake! Not only that, 1 in 4 now employed in the U.S. is foreign born. The progressive agenda is extremely anti-business and their ever-increasing taxes force U.S. companies to relocate out of the U.S. These entitlements and this anti-American/anti-business progressive mindset must stop or the America we once knew will be gone forever and the Globalists will have won.

Bingo here as well. The American Public has grown more and more apathetic. Add to that the often overlooked reason for this massive shift to the left, which is the public indoctrination centers… er, public schools and ultra-liberal colleges and universities that have been at work brain-washing young, impressionable minds for 2+ generations to be good and faithful Marxists, plus the huge population of uneducated, uninformed, gullible people in this country and it’s not difficult to understand why the liberals have been so successful in destroying American Liberty.

Frankly, the whole thing disgusts me.

Liberals are like cats, when they fill one litter box, they move to a clean one and start over.

Funny thing about that rule of thirds. A few years back I was chatting with a father of one my son's friends. He owns a business in town and I mentioned it seemed that 1/3 of the workers in a business did more harm than good, 1/3 managed to stay out of trouble, and 1/3 did all the work and cleaned up after those prone to chittin the bed. His response was he wished the split was that good with his employees.

I break it down a lil different

20% do 80% of the work

60% do the other 20% of the work

And the bottom 20% seem to just add to the workload of the above 80%

There's some variances in percentages but 20/60/20. Seems applicable when dealing with groups of people

Sullivan gets grilled by left-leaning mob at town hall

The auditorium at Bartlett High School was filled, and the crowd lined the walls for Sen. Dan Sullivan’s Anchorage town hall meeting. Most of the more than 200 attendees were activists representing Planned Parenthood, teachers unions, the Alaska Democratic Party, and the Democratic Socialists of Anchorage. An opposition tracker was observed recording the entire exchange.

They found no redeeming qualities in the senator who had come came before them at their demand. They showed him little respect, and many of them seemed to pursue outdoing each other with their shouted invectives.

The town hall was not going to be civil, that was evident from the start.

But the Marine at the front of the room treated the audience with respect. Although taunted, he didn’t insult them when they yelled out that he was “racist” or a “liar.” He acted as though they were mature adults who could be reasoned with.

About 25 members of the audience were in his court, but by-and-large, this was a hostile town hall and played into the hands of the Indivisible movement that was born out of frustrated Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders voters.

Attendees were given green and red cards to use to show their approval or disapproval of the senator’s remarks, which opened with about 25 minutes of comments.

When he wasn’t interrupted by boos, jeering laughter or insults (“You’re not from here, go back to where you came from!”) Sullivan spoke to the importance of the American economy, national security, and especially about tackling the opioid crisis in Alaska.

The remaining hour was devoted to questions from the audience, which were not prescreened, but drawn at random.

Some questions pertained to health care. Sullivan made it clear that the American Health Care Act passed by the House of Representatives still needs work, and the Senate’s version will be vastly different.

The crowd roared “Single payer!”

Sullivan tackled that issue head on: “I’m pretty sure I’m going to get the biggest amount of red cards for this, but single payer is not a workable option for me.”

If showing up was an act of courage, so were his instincts: The red cards went up.

Questioners from the audience frequently demanded a yes or no answer to their questions, and that demand was supported by the people in the stands. When asked if he supports keeping Medicaid expansion, Sullivan went into an explanation about the unique characteristics of the population covered by Obamacare Medicaid expansion: They are able-bodied adults. They are far over the poverty line. They do not have children. They have the ability to work.

Sullivan’s answer was met with even more verbal abuse.

One audience member asked the senator, in all sincerity, to tone down the rhetoric around health care. That person, however didn’t give Sullivan the courtesy of allowing him to respond without ridicule.

Mr. Whitekeys asked the senator, a Marine standing in front of a nearly universally hostile audience, if he had the courage to vote in the best interest of Alaska. Whitekeys is a bar singer in Anchorage who makes a specialty of skewering politicians, particularly Republicans.

Red cards waved when Sullivan pointed out that the reduction in greenhouse emissions former President Barack Obama touted came primarily from natural gas development.

But perhaps the harshest reaction from the audience came from people who shouted down Sullivan for pointing out, correctly, that for many Alaskans, the biggest threat to the economy is the cost of health care, which was made worse by Obamacare.

Throughout the event, Sullivan was self-deprecating and deft at diffusing tensions, handling the situation with grace and dignity.

(Sullivan’s staff will probably characterize the response as “spirited,” but this observer will stick with the term “raucous.”)

At the conclusion, around 35 people rose to applaud him for his efforts. The activists were already moving to the exits to wave their signs at the departing motorists.

One observer was reminded of a James Madison quote in Federalist Paper 63, which said, “Such an institution (the Senate) may be sometimes necessary as a defense to the people against their own temporary errors and delusions.”

The quote was proven throughout the evening; statesmanship was in short supply, but had a quorum of 1.
