Offseason rifle tinkering itch had me wondering:
The Pig: You pick up an off the shelf rifle - T3, R700, Winchester, etc - toss on some rings and glass and get to shooting and hunting. Over time - the gun proves itself as entirely too accurate for the price you paid. It simply out kicks its coverage in the accurate department in its factory configuration. Everyone owns one of these. Maybe its a $600 Tikka, or a $275 Marlin X7 - whatever the model, you know you could have spent 3 or 4 or 5 times as much without any extra accuracy.
At what point do you decide its worth putting Lipstick on the Pig?
Lipstick: Aftermarket, high quality components:
High end stock Bedding Trigger Machined parts (vs something plastic from the Pig)
I'm not the least bit concerned about re-sale. We know how that works - you aint getting the money back out of the Lipstick, as compared to a custom built gun.
So whats your take on giving those Pigs a nice shade of red? Improved accuracy, improved reliability? Or a waste of money that should be saved towards a custom action-barrel and good gunsmith.

If it shoots really well, I'd not mess with the current bedding, but can see putting a proven barreled action in an upgraded and bedded stock, provided you don't care for the original. I'd keep the original though, just in case. Same goes for the trigger and plastic parts. You can always go back to the original configuration if you need to, provided you don't mess with the barrel (crown, firelapping, etc).
Now with even more aplomb

I have put a McMillan stock on a Savage and have a Manners on order for another Savage. Loonyism knows no bounds. Oh and both of those Savages do shoot.

If it shoots, I don't mess with it. This. My T3 Lite in 308 falls into this category. I just dialed in a Leupold VX-R 3-9x42 in Warne rings on a 1913 rail for a hog hunt. Once that’s over I’ll go to Talley Lightweight rings and drop the rail. I toy with the idea of getting a Nightforce scope, but it probably makes more sense to spend that kind of cash on a spare T3 in 308, ammo, and components. Okie John
If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

My 22-250 coyote rifle falls in this category. It is a Remington ADL in a hunter weight barrel without iron sights. The wood stock looks like it came off a broom handle but the rifle shoots and is light enough to carry when walking to multiple locations and setting up to call.

what do you get if you breed a blind bore hog to Maxine Waters? Nothing. (Even a blind hog has some standards)

I am quite sure at this stage of life's game that I will never be able to have rifle built for myself. Especially for what I would want (Biesen, MIller type stocked rifles). However, I would love to have a rifle in a 250 Savage. Not sure why, already have a 25/06 and a Roberts. It was my idea to get a little Marlin xl7s and get a 250 Sav. barrel for it, and then get a Boyd's for it. I realize that many would poo poo that idea or look down on it because it is not a 2 or 3 grand rifle. But it will suit me fine and I can do most of the tinkering with it myself. I actually had the rifle bought, a Marlin in 7/08, but found a young man who needed it and was not able to get one himself so I sent it down the road. Many times the joy is in the journey and not the destination, and each of us differ in the ways we find joy. Now...let me go in there and look through my wife's lipstick supply and see what I can come up. However, with that picture of Maxine looking at me as I write this, I might never look at lipstick the same!

One of the most useful attribute of the Marlin X guns is that the guys who designed it borrowed the good attributes from the Remington 700 series, bolt handle shape and stock ergs, and the Savage 110 series, the barrel nut and small shank barrel specs.
They have usually been available NIB for under $350 and at close out from CDNN for as little as $250. The factory synthetic stocks are OK and can be upgraded to a Boyds stock for under $150.
I don't mind the factory synthetic stocks and I like to swap barrels, so I'm a fan.
If you're not interested in swapping barrels, the Howa 1500s at Whittaker's for $330 are a great deal if you don't mind the Hogue stocks are still a good deal if you can find a V2 stock or GPC S&W walnut stock for a good price to install the Howa 1500 barreled action in.
I have expensive firearms and inexpensive firearms, collectible firearms and common firearms, nice firearms and beat firearms, and I enjoy shooting most of them or I would probably send those that I didn't enjoy down the road.

I bought a Weatherby Vanguard from a member, a 6.5 Creedmoor. It shoots 120 Barnes damn near through the same hole. I bought another stock, but I'm not changing it. Ain't gonna jack up a good thing. I hope to blast some pigs with it this weekend if rain allows.

If I find a rifle that I like and it proves it will shoot well I really like to put it in a lighter weight synthetic stock. I've tried several over the years, but an Edge is the easiest route and by keeping my eyes open have bought 3 of them used at good prices. They are on current rifles I own. I've never found an aftermarket stock to improve accuracy, but I've never found it to be worse either. At least compared to factory synthetic. I've seen aftermarket synthetics dramatically improve consistency compared to wood which expands and contracts changing POI as the seasons change.
My primary goal is weight reduction. I can knock anywhere from 1/2-3/4 lb off a rifles weight, but I also think they look and fit me better.
I also have 3 Ruger American's that I paid under $400 for out the door. I haven't seen any aftermarket stocks for them yet that I'd consider an upgrade.
I did replace the trigger on an older 700 that proved it would drop the firing pin without pulling the trigger. But that was only done for safety issues. Other than that I leave mine pretty much alone.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

It was and continues to be the most accurate out of the box CF rifle that I've yet to own.

I own several Tikkas. They all shoot well or as good as I am capable. Accurate barrel, good action. I do my own trigger work on them and easily get a crisp 2#. Blued you can buy a used one for $400. Add a pair of Talley lightweights and your favorite scope and you have a pretty accurate rifle for $450 + scope.
Now for the lipstick- would it be a good investment to buy an Edge and swap it around to my various Tikka scoped actions??

Quite a few years back, 1973 to be exact, a co-worker had an FN Mauser in .270 he wanted to sell. He got it in a trade so I asked him what he wanted for it? $75.00. I bought it. Frankly it was more for the action as the stock on the rifle was about ultra fugly. Reminds me of a comment by the late Jack O'Connor. "That stock was so ugly it would abort a lady crocodile." Sure fit the one on that .270. At the time I'd never owned a .270 so I bought a couple boxes of 130 and 150 gr. loads and tried it out. The 130's averaged one inch and the 150's slightly over a half inch. "Old Ugly" would shoot. My handloads were slightly better. I seriously gave thought to doing a restock on the gun but would I retain the accuracy? I left it alone. Dunno what the stock wood was but it wasn't walnut as seemed to be too light for birch. I never have figured that one out. The barrel is as slim as a soda straw, 24" but will group three rapid fire before walking. Even with scope and sling and a full magazine I doubt it hits 7 pounds. Great at altitude in the mountains but a bear to hold steady breathing hard. No matter. I think I'll keep it as is. Paul B.

Many years ago, I bought a 308 Browning Safari, built on the small ring Mauser action, wearing the pencil barre. The rifle was cheap because it had been cut and padded an inch short and the barrel channel had been floated, from the looks of things, with a camp axe.
My intent was to use the action for a custom build. Then I shot it. First three @100, 5/8", first two touching. Let it cool. Second group, 1/2". All this with Federals cheapest load.
What did I do to the rifle? I sealed the ragged float job and bought a case of ammo. What about the short stock? I scouted the scope a little farther up. My daughters love the rifle and I find it handy, especially when heavy winter clothing is in order. Don't mess with excellence.

I've had several customs built in the last 5 years. Then I won a Tikka .223 in a raffle. The Tikka out of the box shot as well as the customs and I now have purchased two more T3s. They are damned good shooting rifles.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

IF I had it to do over again, YES, I would put lipstick on the pig. Twenty years ago, my pig was a Savage 110 Left Hand Long Action chambered .223 Rem. Heavy barrel with a floppy tupperware stock. Put a cheap Simmons 6.5x20x50 AO scope on top. Dialed down the pre-accu-trigger. Would consistently shoot under 1/2 MOA with handloads when I did my part. Sold it because I did not like the floppy stock. Would love to have that rifle back in a Boyds or McMillan stock.

If it's a pig it's not worth it. If it's not a pig it don't need it. Want, now..

About the only thing I can't abide is a bad trigger. Factory triggers either get replaced or worked on until they're acceptable. I was pleasantly surprised with the ruger american trigger. Out of the box it sucked but a quick internet search showed instructions on how to fix it & it worked wonderfully. It now has a very crisp 2.5-3 lb pull and the cost was exactly zero.
I don't mess with the bedding if the rifle's a shooter, there's no reason to if it's not causing problems. I'm about to head out on a prairie dog hunt with four rifles, all of which are sub half Moa rifles. Only one of them is bedded, the other three didn't need it. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

If it shoots really good, really don't mess with it. An acquaintance owns a 264WM that used to group 5 rounds well under an inch at 100 yards. He took the barreled action out of the stock and cleaned the rifle well, applied car wax to the action/barrel, and floor wax inside the wood stock. After reassembly, he has an 1 1/2" for three shots rifle.

My Pig was a Ruger All Weather in 280 Remington, Leupold 6X fixed with commercial ammo. It was so accurate out of the box I couldnt help but use it. Perfect meat gitter, no reason at all for any other gun. Killed a couple truck loads with it. I still like it but I use other 280's now.

Then I wouldn't be a pig any more......no matter the looks of a rifle.....1st it must shoot well.....then good glass is a must...all the other goodies are ok if it improves function.....I have collector guns and that is what they are....they do go hunting from time to time. But for me I like the pigs....you can hunt them hard and they will preform as well as a princess.....

If it's a good shooter, then I'll add good glass and maybe a trigger if it needs it.
As to the initial cost of the rifle, I've used bullets delivered to the proper spot far more often than a sales receipt to bring an animal down.

I have a "pig" with a bit of lipstick. It's a Stevens 200 chambered in .223. Picked it up on sale for 260.00 about 7 years ago now. It shot pretty decently right from the start but I hated the tupperware stock. Ended up bedding it into a Boyd's nutmeg laminate prarie hunter stock and installing a Rifle Basix trigger. Now it feels and fits me much better and is absolutely the most accurate rifle in my safe. It shoots the nicest, itty bitty, 100 yard cloverleaf groups you ever saw with 53 grain V-Max's over H4895.

I love dressing up My Pig's, I am a Tikka T3X whore so I like to change out the bolt shroud with a stainless from Glade's Amory ($64) I swap out the stock action screws with Tikka Precision stainless screws ($20) and I love the machined aluminum bottom metal from Mountain tactical ( this is a very nice upgrade for $139)...I dont think it makes My rifles any more accurate as they are already scarey accurate but I think these improvements add to the asthetics of My rifles and I enjoy them more......Hb

I have two. Tikka Hunter 222 and a CZ 452 American. I put a trigger in the CZ and adjusted the Tika's trigger as low as it would go before I fired either. I ain't touching either one of em again.
And that's coming from a compulsive tinkerer.

Ive got a few pigs, I guess, but they're all Tikkas. Compared to the high end and custom jobs they might be pigs, but I'm all about accuracy so I don't mind the curly tail. T3 Superlite Stainless T3 Another Superlite Stainless T3 I bought used here on the Fire Just for fun I get the bolts fluted. I swap out the plastic bolt shroud for metal. So I guess there's some lipstick. P

Accurate utility rifles in my care usually remain as purchased. The trigger may be replaced if it's hard to get good field position accuracy. Other than that, I leave them alone.

I have got a .30/06 Springfield rifle, ugliest sporterised military straight stock that someone whittled on and then scratched some checkering onto and called it good. Probably done in the 1950's. It has a Parker Hale receiver sight cobbled onto the side. It would be the ugliest bloody rifle I ever saw, excepting a Mosin Nagant or any kind of Savage. I got it basically for nothing. The space it was taking up was worth more than the rifle. I had visions of using the action to make a nice old-school sporter in a fine stock, a la Griffen and Howe. All it had to do was just shoot alright and I would be satisfied with three inch groups.
But with any load I give it I can shoot a one inch to 1.5 inch group at 100 meters with that peep sight, and it seems it was brought up in the wild by a family of .300 Magnum's because she gives me top velocity as well.
Can't really bring myself to do anything with it now. Sometimes they earn their place as they are.

My brother gave me his funky ol' first year Marlin 917V, spray painted desert tan & brown w Simmons glass. No telling how many rounds he and his two kids have shot thru it.
Cleaned barrel best I could and put older Micro T1 on it for summer pest control. Does $600 optic on free rifle at least qualify as lip balm?
