I had to pull out the guns to do a little preventive maintenance, so I got to take a gander at a few models. I have come to the conclusion that my top three favorite models are in this order. Though they are all razor thin close.

99H Barrel Band in 250
99G, any with 20 inch barrel
1899 Deluxe

2) early 1899 250-3000
3) 99H barrel band


Put the 99H up there, but was really had to decide between the 99H, 1899B, or an early 99F with the later checkering

#1 99T #2 99RT #3 1899 250-3000 deluxe and since the RT isn't a catalogued model I'd add my DL in 358 to the list. Sorry had to sneak another one in there.

In order by year, not preference:

1912 1899 H 22HP

1919 250-3000 rifle, second style. Thanks Randy.

1950 R 250-3000, my first 99.

Those are the three favorites in my safe. If there were more in my safe, the list might be different. It was hard squeezing out my 1899 B, Joe.

For the few that I have now, my 22HP "H" the Engraved "B" 303, and the 250 BB I do like the "G"s and Like to have a "T" again!

2) Would love a T- never owned one…yet
3) 50's era F in .300

Oh, my first, 50's EG in 300. 1899H, 22HP. And 1956 newer F. Sold mine in .243, Damn.

Wow, that's a nice rifle! If I were to make a list of three 99s that Savage should put back into production it would start with a rifle like pictured above. Something basic, clean and very handy.

You weren't specific as to whether these were rifles to hunt with or just look at.
My three favorite hunting rifles are 308 EG, 303 SRC and pre-war 99E in 250-3000
My favorite ones to just look at are 1899B "F" engraved (on the cover of my book), 1899A "B" engraved and 1895 SRC.

Dead elk and 99EG 308. The elk only went about 100 feet after two hits by the tomato stake at 311 yards.

Elk, SRC 303 and wiley hunter. This one died in its tracks after being shot in the neck at 120 yards.

Dead speed goat and pre-war 99E 250-3000. The goat died shortly after being clobbered at about 200 yards.

The "F" engraved 1899B is on the left.

1895 SRC. I've shot it but not hunted with it.

Well I guess that answers the question on how effective the .303 Savage is on big arss elk!

I don't really like the Savages. Not sure what you guys see in them.

Back in the days before the was a Safeway,or Wallmart, or whatever, within reasonable distance. The deer or duck was shot with a good rifle. Even today, when Safeway is too far and men with a taste for fresh game go hunting after it, it is with a gun they know will do a job.
It's just a tool. I grew up in Northern B.C. Saw a few bears while fishing for salmon on the big rivers. None of us kids ever carried a gun. My dad shot a deer when The Telephone Company sent him over to The Queen Charlotte Islands for a week and he sat in the kitchen drinking beer while my mother and I skinned it. I think that was the 2nd deer of the 2 or maybe 3. We used the meat, that was the main thing, and I liked it a lot. The old Savage was a likely one of the most popular game rifles in those old days. I like them a lot because of the good wood they used ,the history behind them, the different calibers, The look and smooth operation, and the never ending mystery they seem to posess.

If I "HAD" to list them these are the first to come to mind, Really, if it wasn't a "favorite" I wouldn't own it. Passed on a 99G in NY last week. 99G in .303 Sav. only because it showed "a little" gray on the bottom of the receiver. Other than that, wood perfect. numbers matched and NO extra anything. $550.00

No compasses. I may have to hunt elk with the 1895 SRC this fall. Shot placement is everything. We don't need no stinkin' Safeway as long as we have elk and antelope. I'm going to whip up a pot of elk chili for lunch this morning. David

My 1899 Plain Stock , Nice wood Octagonl Barrel in 25-35 Circa 1909. Its my only one and its a Beauty, I wish I could post a photo of it with its Curved Butstock and Peep Sight. I love the History,Quality and the Craftsmanship of these fine Rifles.

A pre mil F with the grooved comb buttstock, bbl band H, pre war R, and a T. Well that's 4. Math was never my strong suit. Didn't ask about caliber but a .30 hole at the end works well.

Thanks Joe , I didn't know much about them until I watched a NRA Show on the Savage 99 and was fascinated with them and their History . It was then I had to have one. I came across this one and it fit in with my other Old guns that I reload for. It's a Keeper for Sure . If another interesting one comes along I'll add another .

Still trying to figure out how they matted the receiver on the Excelsior. Does anybody know how it was done?

1. My favorite is a 99E 300 Savage that I bought new in 1966 when I was 15 years old..I grew up with this rifle.

2. My Pre-War R in 300 Savage...My go-to deer rifle....

3. My pre-mil F in 250-3000 with a Westfield barrel....

I have lots of favorites, but these I hunt with regularly....All are scoped with Leupold 3x9's.....

I been thinking about this posting for several days. Deciding on 3 favorites...I can't do it.

The receiver on the excelsior is "stippled" meaning it is hit with a tiny punch over and over again.

I have all 3 of these except the #2 is a Crescent grade and #3 is a solid frame and not a take down... Great choices!

Personally, talking base models, condition is everything but...

250-3000 Deluxe
A prewar RS in 300
Pre-war 99F checkered in 300

I'm that simple.

Expanding to fancy factory offering would be difficult... About anything with an early Marlin S pistol grip and perch belly and fancy wood and a shotgun buttplate.

Sav 99, just another over rated deer gun! Actually I would like to have a trapper model ,like I think I saw Loggah holding along time ago?
