The military exchanges have a price match on most big ticket items, plus no tax!  When I bought my Surface Pro at the PX, the sales lady helped me get an even better price by accepting a newspaper ad (she provided the newspaper) which saved me $300. I got the $900 computer for $600 and no tax!

Well, isn't this interesting. My files cannot be recovered although they are not listed as having been destroyed in the '73 fire. same here.

They can't tell if I was honorably discharged and need a copy of my DD214.
Luckily I know exactly where that is. I just had my hands on it yesterday morning.

Luckily I know exactly where that is. I just had my hands on it yesterday morning. That's what the system told me too. I pulled my DD214 out of the safe, took a pic and uploaded it. They say I should hear from them within three days.

This opens up shopping in exchanges for those who served but didn't "retire". Until this, general speaking, only retirees had exchange and comissary privileges.

The Exchange system must be hurting for business. I'd be surprised if the Commissary (different organization) did anything like this.

it all sounds pretty socialistic, unless the system is privatized. and it might be, i don't know. back in the day we shopped at the px at ft. hood. it was so-so, but glad we had the choice.

Well, this might be a good deal for some, but I have to wonder about how much business they will actually get. The days of screaming bargains at the PX are long gone, everything is priced about the same as down town, and no Walmart junk available, only top quality and top brands. We shop there a little but only because it is handy and we don't have to pay sales tax, which is great if you are buying a new TV or some such. Yep. The Exchanges, staffed by Gov't (non) workers have become the perpetual self-licking ice cream cone. Their pay and benefits continue to increase, so do the prices.

My dad was retired Marine Corps so we used the commissary quite a bit when I was growing up, the exchange a little bit but not nearly as much as the commissary. My mom was a smoker so she saved a lot on cigarettes through the commissary. When I went in in 1990 I found that the prices for the PX and commissary weren't appreciably any better than out in town so I rarely shopped there unless I was on deployment or TDY where there wasn't anything else around. The only real good deal I remember getting from the PX was on some high end Bose speakers. Bose did the MAP stuff like a lot of optics companies (Leupold, Swarovski, etc.) and the PX didn't have to abide by that. I paid about 60% of the normal price for those speakers through the PX.
Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to see this being done but I don't expect to really find any great deals there, I'd be surprised if you couldn't beat their prices online on most things. FWIW I always found the Air Force exchanges and commissaries to have much better prices than Marine Corps and Navy ones. I think the reason is that the USMC and Navy use the profits from their systems to fund MWR activities and facilities where the Air Force gets those things funded separately and doesn't look to turn a profit on their exchanges.

Thank you for the post. Said my records were lost in the fire and I had to fill out another form and include my DD-214. Did that and they responded that I would hear back in 2 to 3 days. Thanks again.

I see they want ones social security number. Not something I like to hand out on line. I'd think they'd be more inclined to want one's service number. Now they are going to a DOD number .. but a service number that's 1950's talk..

The guys that will use this are the same guys that cussed the Army until the day they got out i.e. Ets'ed. Now they are trying to find long lost glory by shopping online at the px.. As others have said not very good deals to be had at the px.. The commissary has great deal on certain things but better deals can be found off post..

ok, so is the px run by private contractors, or true gov't employees? i use to work in a club on weekends, all private employees, but owned and operated by the military. every one was thankful for their jobs. i know i was mine, and learned a lot while backing up the lifers.
given the new venue of shopping opportunities coming november, what can we look to in terms of bargains, good deals, and come-ons? i don't mind shopping with socialist suppliers if their prices can compete w/the private sector. so, what gives?

I have two sets of dog tags. One with my service number and the other with my Social Security number. I can't remember the exact time that they changed over but it was 1968-1969. I have a paper copy of my DD214 but also on the advice of someone that I can't remember filed it at the courthouse. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.
