I have an Adirondack in .308 and would like to have it rebarrled to .358 winchester.

What company would be best to build the barrel and who's the best to go with for the install?

Don't know "best", but Pac-Nor will rebarrel a Kimber for ya. They did mine and it shoots fantastic. They also put a .358 barrel on my Model 7. Really nice folks.

Now with that said.............. and I'm donning a flame suit, haha.... since .358 is by its nature not exactly a benchrest cartridge, you could save a pile of dough by going with something like a Douglas or Shaw barrel and having IT&D do the rebarrel.....

Alaska Lanche,

What are the specifics on your gun?

Am I reading that scale right? What else did you do to get the wait down?

If you are reading 4 pounds 7 oz (4.4 pounds) scoped you are reading it correctly. Sent my Kimber Montana down to JES and he devoted it from a .308 to a .358 win and also cut the barrel back to 16" for me. I wanted it as light and handy as possible as it's my summer bear protection carry gun now with a delta point red dot on it its sub 4 pounds. Which is a lot lighter than a lot of hand cannons and I can actually hit stuff with it unlike my hand gun shooting abilities wink

I have a trijicon rmr mounted on my Adirondack currently.

The photo you posted looks like a spiral barrel longer than 16".

Did you have to trip to 16" due to the threaded muzzle?

A braver man than I, boy, I bet that little thumper BOOTS ya, eh!

I have messed with and packed several "bear" guns, but, am now building a 9.3x62 on a Brno ZG-47 action, STS Benchmark tube and handmade banded ramp front with Euro Sourdough and Recknagel rear, in a Micky MKX std, fill stock,

It has a 3-pos Dakota safety and will keep the P-H trigger. Cut to 22" and I can shoot this while at 71, end of this month, the super light ones bother me a bit.

Would try an Adirondack in .308, but, have far too many rifles now and can';t backpack very far anyway.

That's a really cool paint job.

I'm looking forward to finishing lightening up my M7 .358 this summer.... got sidetracked with my 6.5 GAP build. I had the barrel re-profiled to a standard Remington sporter (it was a slightly heavier PN profile with a looong shank) and that'll allow me to easily get it out of the heavy laminate stock and into an aftermarket 'glass stock. .358 is a wonderful cartridge... I've killed the majority of my blacktails with one.

Holy moley!!!!

I was looking to do something similar to an '06... open it up to 35 whelen, and cut it down to 20" ish, what kind of velocities are you getting out of the 358 with a 16" tube???

My 338 Federal that comes in at 6 lbs scopes and loaded kicks pretty good, I was thinking of putting a fatter scope on the whelen to add some weight. Almost bought a S&B 2.5-10x56 yesterday, foud a screaming deal, but figured that would have been overkill!

Looks like the forend of the stock has been shortened in addition to the metal work.

Actually it's a whole new stock altogether and half the weight even fully bedded than the OEM kimber stock

Where might someone with a similar desire for pain on both ends find such a stock?

I am getting 2800 fps with 160 grain cutting edge raptors. Just over 2600 fps with 200 TTSX and just over 2400 with 225 nosler NPT. Pretty darn good IMO for roughly only 45 grains of powder and 16" of barrel to burn it in.

Likely will do most my general hunting with the 160 raptors or the 200 TTSX and use the 225 NPT as my bear protection load for summer carry with use with the delta point red dot on it.

Also have a sub sonic 110 hornady XTP load that is a ball to plink with and will work up a load with 158 grain swift A frame (handgun bullet) at around 2200 fps as my reduced recoil load for my nephew and such to use as that bullet still expands down to 800 fps which is the advantage in my mind of the 358 win over the 338 fed and why I went that route was the ability to shoot handgun bullets.

As for the stock its a MPI microlight stock that goes 12-13 oz fully bedded with the recoil pad and sling studs installed.

Have you had some custom lightening machine work done as well?

Is there anything you'd do different in the build after having it completed?

What twist barrel did you go with to stabilize the cutting edge bullets?

I can't remember the twist rate....whatever JES thought was good enough. With twist rates I am sure you know stability is more of a concern with long heavy for caliber bullets than short light for caliber bullets like the 150-160 grain 35 cal Cutting edge Raptors.

Only thing I may change at this point is go with a SWFA 1-4 simply so I can sight the 160 Raptors or 200 TTSX 2" at 100 yards which should be nearly dead on with the heavy 225 NPTs and then be able to use either the reticle or dial to use the sub sonics that are hitting 14" or so low at 100 yards below my hunting loads but 1.5" groups. Be fun if I can figure out the drops to 150 yards or so with the sub sonics for small game and dial in and hopefully since is a SS scope not have to worry about return to zero after I am done dinking around dialing. 6 oz heavier than my current 2-7 Leupold on there and still be well under 5 pounds scoped. smile
