I'm starting to think the same way Guy.After all my 50+ years of hunting,I just started using the 30-06 a couple of years ago.I handload for all my rifles and test them over a chronograph too, instead of relying what a book said it's doing.I have found the 30-06 to be really close in ballistics and also performance on game,to the 7mag and the 300WSM,that I also have a great fondness for.The confidence it has given me makes me believe I have way more rifles than I will ever use for hunting myself.

Most excellent on those trophies Guy! I think it was Bob Malik who said , " a 30-06 is never a mistake" . He was a very practical man. from jack rabits to grizzleys it works. Actually, I believe it was Colonel Townsend Whelen who penned those immortal words and he was right.

I have sold rifles to help defray the costs of a hunt or two. Though I don't use my 30-06 for much, I have yet to take a hunt or an animal with others that it couldn't have handled. I could easily see myself with one good 30-06 or similar to do the majority of my hunting.

Terrific pictures - obviously you can do it all with a 30-06 SPRG! Gotta listen to old Dad.

Congrats on all those fantastic animals. The 30-06 is about the most perfect choice for a one rifle battery and I seem to always gravitate back to it myself.

Apparently finding the right wrapper for the cartridge in question seems to be an issue with some campfire posters. I love 5 cartridges 270 weatherby, 7mm Weatherby, 7mm Rem mag, 30-06 and for some pyschotic reason a 300 weatherby mag. At the current moment I have 4 of them in my possession.

The .30/06 has accounted for just about every species of African game that walks. It is too light (and illegal) for hippo, rhino, elephant, cape buff and lion, but it has accounted for those species as well. Actually, I think it is legal for lion in Zim (but I wouldn't recommend it for that species).
The longest shot I ever took in Africa was at a gold medal springbok, with a .30/06 off the sticks, facing me at 315 yards. Boom, plop.
Great cartridge!

That's why I don't own one(besides an m1 garand) because I'd need to dump the rest of my guns!

200 gr Nosler Partition for the grizzly and wolf Any particular reason for using a 200-grain Partition on a wolf? I'd have thought that a 165 would be about perfect for that... Okie John
If Montana had a standing army, a 270 Win with Federal Blue Box 130's would be the standard issue.

Silly bastards. Everyone knows you need a deer gun and a backup deer gun. And a varmint rifle and one that could do deer or varmints. And a long range one and a couple shotguns. And a home defense pistol and one for the range. And a 22. And a muzzleloader for that season and possibly a backup. And a fast twist version of all above. And...

Okie John I was in the arctic, hunting grizzly. The wolf was a nice addition. Only had 200 gr ammo with me. BTW, that 200 gr Nosler is one heck of an accurate bullet from my rifle. I was pleased! H4350 only gave me a bit over 2600 fps, but dang.... I might just use the heck out of that load in the future because it shot so well. Recoil was rather pleasant I thought, accuracy was great and it opened up just fine on the wolf, while penetrating just fine on the grizzly. Regards, Guy

If one has read a lot of O'Connor's writings, they will know just how much he used the 30-06. Even though he is most often associated with the 270, Jack used a lot of other cartridges as well. The '06 was his wife's "heavy" rifle, the one she used on elephant, tiger, and lions. I'd say it worked pretty good too. I like rifles, and have enough to go around, so to speak, but for all practical purposes, one good one is really you need.

Guy -
I'm only 66 and the first in my family lineage to own a .30-06. That said, I expect Granddad and Dad would both have settled on a .30-06. Uncle chose a .270 Win.
Me, I'm still making up my mind but have given three .30-06 rifles away as wedding presents to sons-in-law. Haven't come around to getting rid of everything else and probably (hopefully!) won't want or need to for another decade or more. When I do I only have three .30-06 rifles for daughters or grandkids. Might have to purchase more!
Coyote Hunter - NRA Patriot Life, NRA Whittington Center Life, GOA, DAD - and I VOTE!
No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Great year I'd say. Tried to reduce the number in my safe, sold 5. One a 06 yet have two more and added another 4 rifles . So much for cutting back.
