Your post contains two errors:
1) you ignore efficiency - case capacity is not the only feature of a case
2) .308 has a higher specified pressure than .30-06. They are not loaded to the same pressure.

And an omission: .30-06 is essentially never loaded with top loads, and as a result the loads can be EXACTLY duplicated with a .308. Same bullet, same velocity.

While trying to point out his "two errors, and an omission," you just agreed with his sentence that you quoted.

Actually, QuickLOAD suggests a .30-06 can push a bullet FASTER than the .308 with both loaded to SAAMI pressures - in other words, the .30-06 can push a bullet faster than the .308 at LOWER pressures than the .308 uses.

That shouldn't be a big surprise to anyone, given the 19% (or greater) case capacity of the .30-06 and the minimal (2000psi) difference in SAAMI pressures. But it is something Lame_Bob never mentioned because it would have destroyed his arguments.

Didn't near read through all these pages, but yrs ago I didn't like the 06 because it seemed like everybody had one and I never was one to just run with the pack. Now that I have one I've learned to appreciate its usefulness and capacity to tackle with authority nearly anything you would want to hunt and still keep things at manageable recoil.

If I was forced to hunt with a firearm that was NOT obsolete, I would give up hunting.

It has been said many times that a person with a .30-06 doesn't need anything else.

For 99.9% of North American hunters, that is as true as ever. I'll give up 0.1% for big bears.

The 30-06 is the "Everyman's Elk Rifle"... it really just doesn't get any better. Load a 180 Partiton at 2,800 and slay beasts.

Bob, if you had something chambered that you AIed, put in a Mc Millan McSwirly, with Talley Lightweight Scope mounts, and blue tape on the barrel you would still be able to kill stuff.

Otherwise...its a lost cause....

Blue tape- that's the ticket!!!

This gal was on the ground before I recovered from the recoil. .30-06, 150g AccuBond, 2991fps MV, 272 yards.

Didn't need the AI, McMillan or Talley accoutrements.
