Howdy folks. I was lucky enough to come into 75 vintage 220gr RN Winchester Power Points (thanks Jeff) and was wondering what experience yall have with the 220gr in the 30-06. The powders I have that will probably fit the bill are IMR 7828ssc, H4831sc, IMR 4831, RL 16, and IMR 4350. Normally I would just fiddle around and shoot a few hundred of them to find what was just right, but since I only have 75, I can't afford to mess around with dead end loads.

Now normally for me accuracy trumps velocity, but for this particular application, I would prefer a load that shoots 1.5-2" @ 2500fps over a load that shoots 1" at 2300fps.

From the reading I've done, it seems IMR 4831, IMR 4350 and RL 16 will probably be my best bet, but I am not certain.

55grs of H4831 should do you well.

My load is 57.5 gr of H4831 with a Sierra 220 gr RN. Chronied at 2500fps. Safe in my pre 64 FWT but work up to it. What is nice, the same load with a 180 gr Game King zeroed in at 200 yrds is with the 220 gr load , zeroed in at 100 yards

I'd probably pick the 4831 myself. Should be a cinch to get 2400 and a good shooting load with that.

Just loaded some up with IMR 4350, IMR 4831, and H4831sc. Hopefully I'll get around to them tomorrow. Got some 180gr loads to get through first.

I forgot to mention that I have a 20" barrel. I guess we'll see how the slower powders perform in it.

I have found that anywhere from 51 to 54 gr. of I4350 is the place to be with 220 round nose bullets. In my 30-06's 51 grains shot almost like a target load.

Yep, accuracy wise 4350 was tops. 52gr put the 1st two in the same hole And I pulled then third. IMR 4831 was the winner in terms of velocity. H4831 didn't shoot worth a flip, surprised at that.

All these were in Federal cases, and that resulted in higher pressures than I anticipated. Next time I'm going to use R-P cases.
