This thread has been an interesting read, provided a few chuckles and had me look at my choices. I used to think I was fairly unfazed by recoil and through my 20's, 30's and 40's reveled in shooting "big boomers". My culling of the herd has been driven not by age but the type of hunting and shooting I do now. I don't see dangerous game in the future unless we win the lottery, so since 2007 the 404 Jeffery, 416 Rigby, 458 Win. and 458 Lott have moved on. I still have my NH Model 70 375 H&H that I'll keep to the end due to the memories and that the 235 gr. Speer reduced load is fun to shoot and flattens pigs. Most of my big game hunting now days is for deer and pigs here in the southeast (mostly on family property in SC) and the occasional trip to the UP to deer hunt with old friends; for that I've been using my Tikka T3 6.5x55 , Sako AII 308 , Rem. 700 SS Mnt. Rifle 30-06 , Ruger M77 MK II 257 Roberts and one of several Marlin or Winchester lever guns for still hunting. If I get the opportunity for an Elk or Moose hunt I have lots of options that are lighter (and kick less) than my old Sako AV in 338 Win. My range time now is more 22 LR, 222, 223 and fun with my M1 and M1903A3 than working up loads for the former "big boomers" . I'm looking forward to getting my Tikka T3X in 6.5 Creedmoor; once a rifle loony always a rifle loony.

Yeah, I have a friend who swore off buying new rifles--or having customs made, something he'd often done too, often from real legends in walnut-stock making. He told me this about a dozen years ago, partly because he still had several pre-'64 Model 70 actions in his safe.
Apparently he didn't go through the 12-step RLA (Rifle Loonies Anonymous) program, because it didn't take.

There's a 12-step program for this madness? Has anyone graduated or been cured?

Heck, I'm thinking of cashing in my "gun chips" and getting back into British roadsters. Austin-Healeys ain't as cheap as they were in a previous life!

I'm turning 68 this December, but the biggest caliber I have is my 35 Whelen and my 350 rem mag. So no problem!!!

Had 2 bad shoulders with Torn rotator cuffs in both, pretty happy with the surgeries. Moved down from .338 mag and 7mm mag to 270 Win in Vanguard S2.

I tend to agree that the 300 Win Mag and up is not much fun any longer. I took one of them deer hunting last year but usually they stay in the safe. One is a Montana Rifle Co product and the other is a Remington 700 that I bought as my first magnum many years ago. Probably time to sell them both.

I am sympathetic to you guys and hope things get better. Jerry No worries. We're good. Thnx and I'm glad. On a diff subject, I've had to stop Dirt Bike riding. I have done MX, Hare Scrambles, Black Jack Enduro and many 2Day, 200 mi Dual Sport rides. I can still ride a dirt bike....but NOT long enuff to participate or compete. Now I'm riding my Street Bike. Guys I know the feeling and I wish things were diff for all of us. Jerry

I just purchased my "big gun" today. It's a T/C Venture .308. That's as big as I plan to go from here on out.

Mike, the 308 ain't a bad round obviously. It's more than adequate for a WHOLE LOTTA hunting. I hope it's an accurate rifle for you and you have great success. However. ....... I don't have anything that SHORT !! Jerry

I got good enough over the ages to kill anything in NA with a 243 as long as its a pre64 FWT.

It's interesting to read all the opinions. It does appear that we come full circle in time.

61 here. My biggest issue is arthritis in my shoulders. Least I think that's what it is. Hurts like hell. Sometimes I find it difficult to hold up my longrifles. So I shoot shorter ones now. Even cut me a forked walking stick to assist with offhand shooting. Seems to work well. Injections work wonders. If you have not tried one, do. I went 5 years on a shoulder that needed total replacement, buying time with injections. My shoulder has now been replaced and is partially frozen with scar tissue. It needs another surgery. I have no idea what kind of recoil tolerance I'll have after that. A 30-06 and 45-70 are the biggest boomers I have ever had. They remain the biggest. I haven't shot either since the surgery. I have shot my 6.5s and had no issue with them. I just ordered a 7mm-08 Ruger ultralight anticipating it becoming my biggest boomer at some point in the near future. Hell I could get by with a 223 for the deer we have down here.
