Blazing Saddles is probably the watermark of 20th Century cinema. Mel Brooks, in the guise of a comedy, explored and exposed many of the pressing social issues of not only that time but time immemorial. His frankness and honesty in addressing these issues were impossible under the repressed Haye's code Hollywood, and as others have noted would be impossible under the even more repressed attitudes of today's left. Political corruption, prejudice, salvation and redemption, you name it.
The character of Mongo is particularly interesting, on the surface he represents the brutishness of man but recognizing this, is filled with an underlying sadness at his inability to relinquish the beast within. His one great line reveals the soul of a philosopher and sums up the condition of humanity and man's place on Earth and in the Universe - "Mongo just pawn in game of life..."

Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!
Mel Brooks is a comedic genius. Blazing Saddles is one of the funniest movies ever made, right up there with Animal House. But I think History of The World: Part One edges them both out for top spot.
And yes, Madeline Kahn lends a huge contribution to every comedy she takes part in. What a talented voice, and she was pretty darned easy on the eyes as well.
I saw an interview where Mel Brooks said he wanted a movie which had everything the censors/hollywood executives would not allow. He was trying to offend everyone and I think he did a great job.
I must agree concerning Madeline Kahn. She has that je ne sais quoi which eludes women like Kim Kardashian.
The wife and I were watching it on TV a few weeks ago and we were saying we need to buy the video before an uncensored version is no longer available. Anyone know if it still is?

I took two dates to see that movie when it came out. The first gal sat through it stone faced and it would be the first and last date with her. The second laughed as hard as I did and would become my wife for 37 years.

One of the best comedy's I've ever watched! Dug out the DVD about 3 months ago... just to enjoy it again. Maybe the best of Mel Brooks! memtb
