Heading up to the Brooks Range on a caribou drop in this August with 3 buddies. Of course, we all picked up a wolf tag just in case. Should we be fortunate enough to be skinning one, will my tail stripper for coon/fox/coyote be adequate or too small? Maybe just take a pair of slip joint pliers? Yes, I realize we may not be lucky enough to need one, but would hate to not plan ahead and end up snapping a tail on a once in a lifetime animal.

Thought this would be the best place to post this question. Would appreciate your thoughts.

With a couple minutes any type of tree or shrub around I can find a couple twigs/branches that can do the job.

Split it full length and skip the stripper. They vary tremendously in fat content and you can use the weight saved for a good wide fleshing knife.

On a wolf? Never done one but I'd think you'd about have it skinned by the time you could strip it , but maybe not.

Also the risk is a little higher at losing the tip if done with a stripper vs. skinning, for fur who cares, for a mount I'd want it intact.. but again can't say on a wolf.

If your taxi cannot fix a broken tail you should be looking elsewhere... ANYWHERE elsewhere!

Find it interesting how many want to chime in though they have at most a wolf or two worth of experience...

You don't need a stripper on a wolf , be carefull and skin down , plenty of salt,, you will be fine!

Late reply, but no.. I figured anyone that had skinned anything knew what I was talking about.

Sitka Deer - thanks for the tip on taking a fleshing knife. Didn’t get a wolf, but that fleshing knife sure made stripping the velvet from our bulls a heck of a lot quicker and easier.
