I am going to buy a dehydrator for making jerky as I don't want to do it the oven anymore. I want one that can handle 4 or 5 lbs at a time. I spent some time looking at them on Amazon and Magic Mill, Chefman and Gourmia are highly rated. Just looking for some firsthand opinions/advice.

I've been using a Weston Vegi-Kiln Food Dehydrator for about nine years now and it has been great. The heat is adjustable 95-155 degrees and the fan and heating element is in the back of the unit. This design is way better than the stack models.I have dried hundreds of pounds of meat on it over the years and still works as good today as it did when I first got it.

i use a Natures Harvest (?) the came from Wal-mart many years ago.Its the round style. Bought extra racks so it has 6 all together. Works good for jerky.
Just make sure it has a thermostat.

Why do you not want to use the oven any longer? That's all I have ever used and the jerky always turns out fine.

Wiz, Don't want the mess and smell in the house anymore. I can put the dehydrator in the garage and let it do it's thing. Plus I want to try do some other foods in the dehydrator.

Ihave an Excaliber. Horizontal trays, rear fan, thermostatically controlled. Bought it about 12 or more years ago. Never had a hiccup yet. Easy to regulate and adjust so that it gets done when you want it to.

Just make sure it has a thermostat. Sounds like the one I have. It doesn't have a thermostat, but does have a temp control. I do only meat in it, so it is always set at the highest setting. The results are fine. Only thing that is a pain is cleaning the racks when finished. I did have to get extra ones to handle a typical 5 lb batch.

You are right. Temp control. I’ve called it thermostat.
I’ve always set it at 105 for overnight jerky cooking.

I've used a round one for years but last year I bought one with square trays. Works much better when squirting the meat out of a jerky cannon. I believe it's a Natures Harvest.
