What I find equally troubling, if not more so is The Industrial Internet of Things.If I'm reading that correctly, they are putting entire manufacturing plants on the internet, including their instruments, control valves, controllers and whole control systems. Without iron-clad security it seems to me that they are heading for a train wreck. I wonder how many people are going to die as a result of security breaches over the next, say, ten years.

A great essay on a subject that has troubled me for many years, although I do not have anywhere near the technical expertise nor insight into the ability to abuse these new services as does the author. Scary. Link to essay.I still haven't gone to a smart phone yet. Mostly I'm bothered by the GPS tracker and data recorder I know my 2012 truck has on it.

The main point here is that simple as the Echo device may seem, once you connect it via the internet to the GDI, it is accessible to any other processing element of that global structure. Anyone who listens to and speaks to Alexa opens himself up to monitoring by and voice prompting from a vast universe of digital resources operated by unknowable entities in unknowable locations. And without realizing it, he willingly provides input to "big data" archives.
This is what "the cloud" means. Instead of being connected to your neighbor's laptop, or Amazon's server bank in Timbuktu, you're interacting with a vast, unstructured, indeterminate array of digital resources in the ether. I need to consult with my M1 on this.
I am..........disturbed.
