Saw a really big forkie on the side of the road this morning on my way to the woods. Big dummy just stood there when I stopped the car. Coulda popped him out the window with the M63 on my hip. Big antlers, but no points to speak of. Lookin' for love, I suppose.
The bowhunter I ran into a mile up the trail later said he saw the same one on his way in, in the same place.
What fresh Hell is this?

Ya, he's an interesting one. Retard buck, but also has (had) an injury to one leg. Maybe that is connected to the one really screwed up antler? The other antler is just plain bad genetics. I was happy to take him out of the gene pool.

WyoCoyoteHunter: Yeah I love that long heavy barrel - and the caliber (270 Winchester) just does a superb job on Deer. Variety is the spice of life when it comes to having choices for Hunting. And this Deer I recently shot had just a huge body laden with MUCH body fat. Was out Elk Hunting this morning (11/10) and saw much rutting activity by the Mulies we encountered. Pintlar: No that is the "total" number of points on both sides. Personally (traditionally) "I" and most all my Hunting compatriots count Mule Deer thusly - a 4x4 has four points on each antler and if it also has eyeguards then we refer to it as a 4x4 with eyeguards - if a Mulie has 5 points on one side and 4 on the other it would then be referred to as a 5x4 - etc etc. But on the Whitetail Bucks that we are referring to we just add up all the points including eyeguards we call it an eleven pointer. Maybe this topic would be a good one for a thread here on the Deer Hunting forum? Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

T Inman: That is some kind of gnarly Buck! Wow. Good for you. And thank you for your input on your experiences on the differing onsets for the different sides of your valley (which is quite WIDE in places for those who are not familiar with the Bitterroot Valley. And you captured that gnarly Buck with such a cool Rifle. Good for you. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

Headwatermike: Here in SW Montana the diligent Game Wardens not only have "Robo-Deer" they also have "Robo-Elk" and "Robo-Bobcat"! Last year the article in the local paper noted the fine the "hunter" who shot Robo-Bobcat had to pay, but also the monetary assessment said "hunter" had to pay to repair the inner workings of Robo-Bobcat that had been harmed at his shot! Yeah don't even think about shooting from, across or along a road in SW Montana - the fines REALLY add up. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy

There are really about 4-5 different ruts in Texas. Anywhere from the 2nd week in November, Thanksgiving, early December and in deep s.Texas where I use to hunt from Christmas till New Year. Depending on where you live, the further one goes south the later the rut. powdr
