What is an approx complete cost to rebarrel an 84m Montana? What would be the best factory duplicate choice for accuracy? Who is a good smith to do the work since I don't know any locally?

I can't help with the price, but I'd send it to Pacnor. I'd get them to dupe the factory contour out to the end of the forend, and then taper to 0.600" at 22.

any rebarrel using a quality barrel is going to run 700 or more depending on the action. I know that Lilja makes a factory contour for Kimbers.

Lilja barrels is what I used on 2 builds. Adam Bentley of Dresden Gun Company did the labor. He did a great job.

One rebarrel was with a Montana that Adam didn't do, but I sure wished I knew about him then. The one Adam did is a Classic and he matched the matte finish to the action perfectly.

I did the stock.

$706 with shipping and all. I just had Pac Nor put a new barrel on my 84M. Subtract $35 if using a standard contour.

I should add that it does help that I do the inletting for a rifle stock company.

That should be a winner!! I had a 300WSM Montana for such a project, but I sold it to fund a couple of hunts in a year where I drew way more/better tags than I anticipated.

Pac-nor is who I used.I had them install a S.S. Super Match Grade barrel. They did resurface my boltface,so I know they worked on trueing the action.Barrel was $325,installation was $300, Shipping back to me was $48,I paid $19 to ship the barreled action to them for a total price cost of $692.I was pleased with their work, the rifle will shoot 1/2" or better groups consistently and that's good enough for me.Turn around was 10 weeks total there and back.

Oh my! I love that stock! I might have access to a good 40-50? year old piece of walnut for a stock.

Thank you fella's. It turned out pretty good. This is the first Kimber I've ever inletted for and some great help and advice from the shop owner plus the other employee. Adam did an absolute fantastic job with matching the matte finish and truing every thing up. I think all told with the truing, barrel price, bluing, lapping lugs, ect. it came to $750. It shoots better than I can and seems to love RL26.

I don't remember if I mentioned it before, but this one is English Walnut.

prm, if the wood has been dried properly it should make a great stock. What walnut is it?

The wood I may pick up is Black Walnut. Turns out it’s about 60 years old and was originally dried for the purpose of making a stock. Been sitting in a basement in the rather dry Rockies since.

In that case I would not be afraid of using it.

The third rifle done is Black Walnut if I remember correctly. Black Walnut rifle

Thanks. I don’t know where to begin... Action, cartridge, and there is actually turning the wood into a properly shaped stock.

I would have Pac-Nor do everything. No need for a smith to do this. And it may come out how you actually wanted it in the first place. smirk

It will help you to know the action, long or short, then barrel contour, floor plate or not, also, ebony tip or plain. I would start there. Mine was originally going to be for a Husqvarna 1900, but as it was being roughed shaped I changed my mind and went Kimber.
You will also need to decide what stock style you want. Sporter, with or without cheek piece, if cheek piece then shadow line or not. Monte Carlo or no Monte Carlo. Lots to decide and know before jumping in.

Not sure if this helped you or confused you more. grin

Wanted to add that I built mine to use and not as a show piece. No laughing at our dwarf Deer, but these 2 were shot using the Kimber. I'm not a trophy hunter, so legal meat is all I'm ever after.
The bigger one was shot using a Hornady 100gr. Interlock at a little over 225 yds. The smaller one at 80yds. using a Nosler 95gr. Partition. Point of impact at 100yds for both loads is within 1" of each other.

Have Pac-Nor do the complete job, that way if there are any issues you do not end up having the gunsmith or Pac-Nor playing the blame game.

You can go their website and prices are posted there. They do good work and make good barrels, I have had 4 done by them in the last few years and all have shot very well.

I really appreciate it guys. I knew one of the big companies did the complete job but for some reason i was thinking Lilja and I couldn't find anything on their site about smith work, except that they didn't do any.

Have to jump in for Hart as well. Family owned shop, fast turnaround, and if you want accuracy, check their rep on benchrest sites. Since they don't make CM barrels, they are perfect to do your Montana.

They made a dupe barrel for me for my 8400 WSM, unfortunately the gunsmith I was using has passed, so it's not high on my list to finish. Hart's end of it was wonderful.

My son and I have had Pac-Nor do three. All very accurate and chamber without a hitch. I highly recommend them. Begin by going to their website, study their barrels, follow with a phone call and discuss your project. Sure a glad I did.

If you are looking for a smith, I have a Kevin Weaver custom Kimber on the way, so he may be a consideration as an option also.
