Just picked up a RAR in 22 Mag. It's going to be a porch rife with coyote in mind. No more than 60 yard shots and I know placement trumps all. That said, between a CCI 40gr HP, 40gr Win HP and 30gr Hornady Vmax, what would you pick?

I am using the Hornsby V-max in my cz452 and killed a large for this area 36 lb dog coyote last night the went about 40 yards before calling it quits. Shot was quartering away at 50 yards, bullet passed through and came out the off shoulder. Didn't skin it so no idea of internal damage. The bastards are coming into the back yard trying to coax my young male lab to come chase them. This was number 5 since summer.

If that Win bullet you are talking about is the one that has a good bit of exposed lead, they open up pretty good, penetrate well and leave a large wound channel. Have you sighted it in yet? I just bought an RAR Target model in 22LR and took it to the range today. I think it's going to end up being a pretty good one.

My one .22 WMR is a CZ455 barrel. It is particular, and won't shoot 40gr. bullets worth a hoot. It shoots quite well with the 30gr. VMax loads. That said, I'd strongly prefer any of the 40gr. HP or softpoint loads over the 30s, regardless of the accuracy differences, on something the size of a coyote. I'm guessing you bought one of the RARs from Whittaker's, on sale. I'm tempted, too.

Years ago I played around with a .22 Mag for a calling rifle. The old Super X 40 gr. hollow point was the most accurate in my Marlin so that's what I used. I killed some coyotes out to about 80 yards with it. Double lung shot coyotes would run a short distance but I found them fairly easy. I learned how tough a chest shot quartering on or head on coyote could be. Those coyotes I didn't always find. I started centering the neck of those head on coyotes and all was good again. For what it was, I felt the Winchester load did its job pretty well back then.

When I was a younger man I had a Marlin 22 WMR bolt action with a tube mag. I used it on the ranch and killed a lot of coyotes with it, and some out to about 175-200 yards. I used Winchester 40 gr hollow points. Later I got a 222 Remington SAKO rifle and I could load 222 cheaper than I could buy 22 WMR so I sold the rifle. The 222 was more accurate and had much better range but I can't say anything bad about how the 22 WMR worked for coyotes. I never lost one that I hit with that rifle.

I think the 22 mag is ok for coyotes well past 60 yards.

I've only used the 30gr. V-Max on bunnies and gophers but I would definitely give it a go on dogs.

They're wicked. Should make some nice lung soup.

I use a 22 mag a lot for calling populated areas. I swore by 40 gr Win Super X Hollow Points in the silver box for years, in fact I still do. However, during the 22LR shortage I had a hard time finding the Winchester stuff and found out 40gr CCI Hp's work nearly as well.

You can skip right over the 30gr stuff, doesn't work well on coyotes in my experience. It is great for foxes though.

GC described the 22 mag on coyotes pretty well. I too will only take a neck or head shot on quartering to or straight on shots. Broadside behind the shoulder usually equals a short death run but will sometimes fold one up on the spot. My preferred hold is center of the shoulder on broadside presentations. The 22 mag with the 40gr loads WILL break shoulders and still exit.

I try to keep my shots to about 125yds max but have killed coyotes further. IMO, the little 22 Mag is quite the coyote charmer if you can shoot and know the range limitations.

I'd prefer the heavier bullet, but I generally use whatever gives me the best accuracy.

I've had great luck in the accuracy department with the cci 40gr hp in all of my 22 magnum rifles. Not much experience on coyote size critters but they turn little critters in side out.

Either of the HP's. Yotes dont always stand around broadside, I personally would want penetration.

Nothing wrong with the V-Max. Have killed coyotes with it in the 17 HMR. But, they were broadside shots.

I seem to remember shooting a coyote or two, over 10 years ago, with Rem 40 grain JHP's. Nothing really stands out, so must have worked with no issues. [bleep] ups seem to stand out in my mind.

My Predator did not shoot any ammo particularly well but I did not get a chance to try the Vmax. Sold it, managed to stock up on WMR including the Vmax for a Single Six so I will buy a Compact as a replacement. I had a similar question about the WMR vs the HMR and responses where highly in favor of the WMR and 40+ gr ammo for squirrel and larger game.

I've carried a .22 mag forever it seems. Killed a ton of stuff, including 2 coyotes with Winchester 40 gr HPs. My old Marlin shot those very well.

When ammo got scarce I loaded up on the CCI 40 gr JSP, Gamepoints they're called i'm pretty sure. They worked just as well.

I'd probably keep it loaded with whichever it shot the best, and I could get plenty of. I doubt a good shot with any of those 3 would be shrugged off at modest ranges.
