We had the M7 bayonet and kept that attached to our web gear in our lockers - bayonet, canteen, butt pack and two ammo pouches were the standard uniform. Several of the NCO's and officers also carried some form of belt knife, most of the ones I recall would have been standard hunting type knives of that era with a 4-6" blade and a stacked leather or stag type grip. Our Battalion CO carried a big-ass Randall Bowie with a camouflage scarf tied around the handle. I didn't know the model but looking at the catalogued ones today it was most likely a Model 12 9" Sportsman or the 13" Raymond Thorpe model, it definitely had the T shaped hilt. As a 19 year old I lusted after that knife and knew where he kept it; that was one of the very few times in my life I seriously considered larceny.

And in other tidbits, we'd have alerts every now and then where they'd wake us up at 4:00 AM and tell us the Russians were coming so we had to fall out in all of our gear ready to go. I had a scoped Winchester Model 70 .308 and a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag in the arms room and for some perverse reason the NCOIC there made me check those out along with my M16. I had a sling for the Winchester but no holster for the SBH, so every alert I'd have my M16 on one shoulder, a Model 70 on the other and a .44 Magnum SA revolver stuck crossdraw in my web belt - properly called a pistol belt btw.

I carried one with me for 13 years as a Huey CE. We had a pocket on the inside of the left thigh with a lanyard. I also took one with me when I went to Afghanistan as a contractor.

When I joined the Canadian Armed Forces I was issued one of these 'Det Knives". Went to turn it in to Supply when they brought out the multi tool, Supply Tech looked at and told me to keep it as he had no idea what to do with it. Still have it around here somewhere. Jumpers and a few others get issued a Russell belt knife and these days everyone gets issued a Leatherman or Gerber multi tool. I was issued a Russell when I was flying with a TacHel Det as their flight medic.
During the Sarajevo Airlift I carried a Cold Steel Master Hunter that was my own purchase. Was a flight medic on the CC130.

I was issued a fixed blade survival knife and a Aircrew survival pocket knife back in 1981.

When I was in the U.S. Army the only people who I remember being issued folding knives were commo wiremen, engineer demolition specialists, aircrews, and airborne troops who were issued those crappy orange handle Camillus switchblades with a riser blade.

Every infantry company that I was assigned to had crates full of M7 bayonets, but I don't recall ever seeing them issues to the troops.

When I was recalled to active duty for the First Gulf War I saw several cases of new M3(?) knives with tan grips and tan M10 sheaths in a warehouse at Fort Polk, LA, but I doubt that they ever made it to the troops in the field.

K-Bars were standard USMC issue in Vietnam. I also carried a Buck 110 that I bought at the PX for $10 before I went over. Still have and use both.

It is called a "demo" knife. Everyone in SF at that time had at least one. I normmly carried a Swiss army knife in my pocket and a kabar on my LBE. I changed out the kbar for my Randall when deploying.

In the Australian Army we were issued a pocket knife, basically a yachstman's knife in design, with marlin spike, screwdriver, a thick main blade and a tin opener, and all-metal construction. I still have mine kicking around somewhere, but TBH I never had much use for it and always preferred the Swiss Army knife.

FWIW we also were issued bayonets, and taught how to use them. This was in the days of the L1A1, which might show my age.

Holy Cow! I can't begin to tell you how glad I am to have never been in a situation where I needed one of those!

Then you would have loved the M1917 model!

I had one of the little folding stainless knives for four years back in the 60s. I has lived in my tackle box for the last fifty years. The only knife I carried was a Buck 110, I bought it just after Buck released it and still have it.
