In the book Book of North America I think the largest whitetail was killed in Maine with a shotgun. It went about 500 pounds. The rack was very small in comparison to the animal. I can't verify now since the book is not on my shelf. I lived in Maine for 17 years and while there are quite a few deer over 200 lbs shot most years NONE close to 500 lbs are recorded in the Maine Antler and Trophy Club, which has kept records for many years. As of 2015, the heaviest (free ranging) whitetail deer that has been recorded had a field weight of 402 pounds. It is estimated that this animal had a live weight of 511 pounds. The deer was shot and killed in the state of Minnesota in 1926 by Carl Lenander Jr. To date that recorded weight has not been broken.

Im a member of mastc and biggest bucks in Maine club. 5x5 perfect category, a bunch of friends and people I know have entries . Lots of people never bother with it also.

I lent my issue to someone and never got it back. An excellent read. A friend of mine had a deer farm and had four bucks that scored over 200" and he told me that he got a much bigger kick out of getting a free range 6 pointer up near Rhinelander. He got a ridiculous price for those big bucks, even more than a big bull elk and the deer were easier to raise.
My other auto is a .45
The bitterness of poor quality is remembered long after the sweetness of low price has faded from memory
