What did you use on the turkey?

That rifle is my rattle-can, Rem. 700 Custom KS, chambered for the 300 H & H.

I had gone to the canopy and got set up in the stand about 6:00 AM. Shooting light is not till around 7:15. I luv getting set before day-break and watching/hearing the woods come alive.

The fog rolled in just after shooting light and did not dissipate until after 9:AM this particular morning .



I was glassing for Aoudad.






sometimes a hoglet (or two) will wander by



and on occasion, even a javalina or two.




The turkey was a target of opportunity!

Cool... Texas has a lot of good stuff.. The H & H & turkey is just neat... Some of my friends use the short mag.s on big gobblers just because!!!! Gee you are pretty close to heaven!!

I prefer to take turkey with a rifle. I've been on this lease for about 14 years and as such have figured out where the Turkey roost, and the areas they frequent. We also hunt over spin cast feeders and from time to time I will be in the right place at the right time.

But my absolute fav-0-rite "Turkey Gitter" is my Sako Riihimaki in 222 Rem, loaded with the 43 gr. TSX .

I'll ride around on my ATV, and stop from time to time and either use a box call, a reed or my FX3. In the spring the Toms are much more vocal. I hear them gobble and then the stalk is on!

Ahhhh..300h&h...mo penetration!

The turkey reminds me of Norwegians (and other Scandi hunters) going after Caipercaillie with center fire rifles, hunt and spot them in the tree tops, on skis in the winter too.

one from a while back that I hunted for 14 months, and saw three times before I was able to close the deal.






a couple of ewes I took at 300 yds. plus. The first with my Sako Varmint, 7 mag as a target of opportunity (the ewes make excellent jalepeno/cheese summer sausage).



and the next at appox the same distance with my Rem. 700 Sendero in 338 RUM



I've a box blind set up on top of a hill that overlooks a creek bed and the hilltop/ridge that across the canyon. From time to time in the afternoon,when i'm hunting hogs, and the sun is just right, I will catch the gleam of their yellow coats as they traverse over the top of the hill across the canyon. The top is about 400 yds. I like to wait till they troop down and present a 300 yd. shot. IMHO, closer is better.



a youngster that spied me walking in. If they see ya', typically they are gone in a flash. This kiddo did not yet know to be afraid of critters like me!


and one that I shot and looked for, from the evening I shot him and for several months, and never recovered.

this and one other are the only pix I have of this stud.





It was about a year later after this pix on the game camera that i was sitting in the stand and I saw him come over the top of the hill with his harem. I had my Sako Bavarian Carbine chambered for the 308 Win., which was zero'd at 100 yds. I waited till he got to about 300 yds (ranged with my Leica 1200 LRF). I held over at the top of his withers and let fly. The Bavarian carbine has a set trigger that breaks at 9 oz. I was confident at my shot. I heard the whap of the 150 gr. Nosler Accubond and saw him hunch up at the impact, through the scope as I re-gained the sight picture. He immediately ran straight down-hill and disappeared in the scrum. One would not think so, but at 300 yds. across canyon, when you''re in a stand at near the same elevation as cross canyon, it is totally different when you have to downhill about 300 yds, cross a streambed and climb back up another 300 yds. To make matters worse it was about 20 minutes before the gloaming. I looked until dark thirty that night and never found blood. I came back the next two days, and nary a trace. I knew I made a good hit, but never did find the critter. Don't lose many and I was sick over losing this one.

I have several lenses, but the three I use the most in descending order

These days it seems I shoot much more with a camera than I do with a rifle!

As you probably know, much of the time spent "afield" is stand hunting. I find that taking a camera along adds another dimension to my hunt. I get to spend quite a bit of time afield, so whether I "kill" is not the end all and be all. I'm sure I miss game, as I sometimes get more enjoyment out of "shooting" stuff with my camera these days. One thing fer sure, ya' don't have to "skin" an electronic image. LOL
