A friend and I are considering doing a hunt in Australia. With the current anti-gun climate I am hearing about Australia what is the difficulty of importing a rifle to hunt if any?

It's my understanding that it works like this. In order to bring a rifle into Australia you would need to be booked with a licensed outfitter. The rifle is placed on their firearms license for the duration of the hunt then removed when the gun leaves the country. A DIY "bring your own rifle" hunt isn't possible. You can bring in archery equipment without any restrictions.

I thought you guys had wild dogs, don't they gang up and eat some of that stuff? You need to import a few hundred Canadian and Alaskan wolves. They know how to eat up and would chow down on about all of your critters. Those donkeys, pigs and goats would go first. I am sure they could handle the young camels and would be more then happy to kill any thing they can chew on.

Get some Honey Badgers for the toads and snakes. They are a fascinating critter to me.

The heat would probably do the wolves in though.............

The cane toads have poison glands on them and there is only one type of predator that is immune to it. Unfortunately it is a small snake and it can only eat one toad a month.

We have got some wild dogs - the native dingo and domestic dogs gone feral. For the most part there are not large numbers of either.

Not that you are allowed to hunt them but Great White sharks are prevalent around the coast line. Luckily you don't have to worry about them in Darwin because the crocs eat them grin

Bringing in animals to control other pests is what got us the cane toads in the first place. They were brought in to control the beetles which were eating sugar cane.

I don't think we'd fall for making the same mistake again.

Evidently meat ants are immune too, and swarm over and kill them, and there's a few other animals which eat them or their tadpoles, and survive.

A 17 HMR toad safari could be a hoot.

I’d require some native porters and a large quantity of gin!

I've had more trouble getting my guns out of Australia than in. Given enough time and some gentle prodding and reminding they eventually get around to printing your permits. On arrival they will photo-copy everything in sight and send a very friendly 1/2 hour doing god knows what. There was some outfitter information on the NT permit application, but I don't remember any of that on the SA form.

Oddly; on the way out its like they've never seen a rifle or a piece of paper before. If I do an export permit in one province, they'll want it done again on exit from a different one. Wait until the departure location and they will ask why I didn't do it in the province I was hunting in. Air-port customs/ security will send you to the customs house, the customs house will direct you to the airport. Wherever you are, the "only person who know" won't be there, but always seems to be available by phone. Funny thing is there isn't anything on the export application other than identity, address, serial numbers, flight info and value. Same form everywhere near as I can tell. Why the export permit isn't issued with import permit is beyond me.

Because that would be too easy silly!

Just be lucky you didn't have to deal with any local coppers who seem to make up rules based on their own personal view of firearms.

Umm, just so you know for future reference "asking us to go out for a few beers" is definitely not the same as "go to the pub for a few beers".

One is asked to "go out" if one is a prospect, one "goes to the pub" for a beer.

Ha Ha!

Do I glean from the question that sandpit might be inquiring on the assumption game seasons could be closed? If so, I can tell you there is no closed season for most deer species in Victoria, at least. We generally don't hunt them much in the summer because the stags usually have no antlers then but it can be hot, the snakes are out, the leaf litter is like walking on corn flakes and you often can't light a fire. If there is fire, it may be the worst kind of forest fire in the world, because of the oil in the eucalyptus leaves.

Without the French you would still be English...and the past administration ably demonstrates your lack of freedom.

The might of the U.S. armed forces are definitely a deterrent to the despot regimes of this world and long may it remain so. However, unfortunately for you on the home front, the U.S.A. ranks well down the list for personal freedom and it's not improving. In other words, you're not as FREE as you think you are.

We all owe a debt to the all the armed forces personal and civilians from numerous freedom loving democracies who fought and sometimes died and still do to this day, to protect freedom and liberate those who were and are enslaved by tyranny. That includes the U.S.A. of course.

My American friends and family who have fought with other America soldiers have gave all us America`s much more freedom than any other country in the world too. name one country stronger with such freedom of choice that can protect it`s self from any country without help, there is none stronger than the U.S.A. , we also feed most of the world in one way or another with no thank you in return ! > Your ranking system of freedom is incorrect, I suppose you think New ZEALAND is more free`er ? you have a nice country but for protection and your freedom> you need America as does every other country in the world who has some freedom. My fellow countrymen and family members fought and died in all the major conflicts of the last century and in the so called war on terror too, right alongside of the U.S.A. and our other allies. We lost more people per head of population than you did in WWII. Yes, New Zealand is more free than you are:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10858183 -

https://townhall.com/columnists/johnstossel/2018/01/31/freedom-ranking-n2441879 -

https://bigthink.com/experts-corner/is-america-free.

There are other examples of course, however, in reality, differences are small and don't mean much of anything to the average citizen I would think. It's been my experience that all the democratic nations of the world have a lot of freedom. I will add that NZ was the first country in the world to give women the vote, although my Aussie friend jokingly reckons that was a grave mistake. I have travelled extensively all over the world on different occasions and have visited the US.A. three times and have visited forty three states there; probably a lot more than you Pete. On average I really liked the many hundreds of Americans I've met. Great sense of humor too.

I agree the democracies of the world need the U.S.A. and thank God for America, because you're a large powerful nation militarily and also share the fundamentals of democracy and freedom. You keep the despots at bay. My mother, when she was alive, told me that during WWII she and her three sisters were petrified that the Japanese were coming to invade us. She was grateful for the rest of her happy life that the U.S. armed forces stopped them in the battle of the Coral Sea. Many US. servicemen were based here during WWII prior to engaging the enemy in the Pacific. My grandmother often invited a group of American boys to her place for a good home cooked dinner. Our own troops were over in North Africa and Italy at the time fighting the Axis forces there. At least Australia had enough sense to send some of their troops back for home defence. The Aussies have always been very practical people.

As for the claim, that I heard several times while in the states, that America won WWII etc, we won't go there except to say all the allies won. The Red Army killed 8 out 10 German troops. It would've been a different outcome entirely if it wasn't for the Ruskies.

Most nations are very patriotic and while patriotism is mostly a good thing it also can sometimes blind one to reality. From the time one is young enough to comprehend things you're bombarded with patriotism that eventually invades your sub consciousness. An example, America is the best country in the world or NZ is the best country in the world or France is etc. Truth is, people sprouting that sort of nonsense have usually never been or lived anywhere else or visited all the countries in the world or at least the free nations so how the heck would they know? I have noticed though that this form of almost brainwashing is more prevalent in the larger nations.

Anyway, good hunting to you Pete.

here`s what most American`s feel including myself, we pay by our taxes to protect the world with our military and those young soldiers are our kids, most countries in the world want everything free from us Americans, our hard earned tax money. so we protect ,send money and feed most of the world and many of these countries hate Amercans and turn around and shoot us in the back and they still want our help. what has your country done for America ? I bet if you look at dollars and cents your country owes America a lot of money just like every other country. as our new President Trump has said its time to pay up, and us the quiet majority of America who voted this great man in as president we want our funds " money" back . don`t forget this about world war 2 may have been lost and because Pearl Harbor was bombed the sleepin Big Dog was awoke`n and the rest was history truthfully America won that war. General Patton was also right and our other Generals should have let Patton continue thru Russia and cleaned that Ruskie problem up too. yes you have a great country ,hope you stay safe while hunting and good luck.Pete53

p.s. you might have been to more states than myself,i try to stay out of the liberal areas and states ,I live in the country away from people ,near or along side wild animals in my yard, and I like it that way . we have had bears on the deck, timber wolves on the drive way and deer all over yard, many years ago even a mountain lion in the field also all kinds of small animals and birds.

Apparently neither history nor current affairs are strong suits of yours.

What has Australia done for America? Well, just for starters, when your country was attacked by Japan we were the first country to declare war on Japan to support you. Yes, that is right, we supported you when you were attacked, not the other way around. One hour after Japanese bombers started attacking Pearl Harbor our Prime Minister declared "from one hour ago, Australia has been at war with the Japanese Empire"

We have also supported you in the various wars you have got yourselves involved in since then, sending our young men and women to put their lives on the line in wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and several others. We also have nearly 200 of our firefighters risking their lives fighting massive fires in California right now, far from the first time we've lent a hand in such activity. Australia also invests heavily in the US - the fifth largest investor in your economy, putting in over $600 billion.

We contribute our share to defence, and always have. This includes operating joint defence bases, satellite ground stations and other facilities, training bases and joint training exercises, and when the US has called on us to assist in its defence we have always answered the call.

You may like to think that the US won WWII, but that war had been going for over two years already before the US got involved. America stood by as Europe was invaded, and as Britain and others who might have thought themselves allies of the US were under massive attack, only getting involved when war was declared on it. Other countries committed more men as a percentage of population, and lost more men as a percentage of population too - including Australia, and the war would not have been won without all of those contributions and sacrifices. Your breathtaking ignorance is an insult to the memory of all who fought against the Axis powers, including that of your own countrymen.

You truly are completely uneducated and ignorant about the world and it's history and it's obviously a waste of time trying to be civil or converse with you because you're completely brainwashed but you don't even have a clue that it's happened.

We don't owe America any money as far as I know but America sure as hell owes the Chinese a lot and so does just about everyone else.

Maybe NZ and the Australia should both stop giving our hard earned tax dollars to help feed the world's poor too and spend the money on a giant wall to keep people like you out. By the way how's your great wall project going to keep beaner's out?

I don't think that is the issue Dan, t'would appear English is not the fellows first language so I suspect he is another lefty troll attempting to cause dissension through use of a sock-puppet, and is too stupid to realise that Australians do not get all bent out of shape with identity politics or asinine assertions of such.

The 'fire seems to be rife with them at the moment.

Dan, I have to agree with you, and it pains me...The US Army sent special troops to Papua New Guinea to by trained in the art of jungle fighting by those who were considered the best in the world in jungle combat.

Although New Guinea isn’t Australia, it is believed that many of the instructors at this training camp were Australians. These American trained up troops returned from New Guinea and entered the war in the pacific theatre becoming known as the “Alamo Scouts”...

America’s first specialized force tasked with chasing the Japanese all over the Philippine Islands under General Walter Krueger.
My father was a Alamo Scout and said they were some of the best fighting men he’d ever seen...Australians are far from gun shy pussies when it comes to war, and have always supportted the US military by sending talented men of war to fight...I’ve never head a complaint about an Aussies being a poorly trained bullet catching soldier. I give much respect to those who fought and fought well and continue to do so whenever they are called upon by her allies.

What pains me most is how did a Koala Bear Faced pansies ass lover like JS ever survive in your country amongst brave men? One could, I guess, objectively assume, someone had to cook, clean and sew patches on the men’s uniforms. Possibly making JS an ASS-ET to some men...😎😳

My God, how ignorant of history can someone get?

https://www.secondworldwarhistory.com/world-war-2-statistics.php Have a read of the middle column dude. Take special note of Russia and China (allies in WWII) and see if the sawdust in your noggin can strain itself to comprehend the numbers.

As for your president I don't dislike him. In fact I find him very entertaining and even likeable. Most of the rest of the world is laughing at you though. However, I still haven't quite figured out if your el presidente is 100 cents in the dollar or that he's so smart that he pretends to have a few screws loose in order to get support from the multitudes of you who are definitely not 100 cents in the dollar. Still, he has to be better than the alternative - Slick Willie's other half. Not that I really give a rat's azz,

It appears that JS is correct; you're just another alien new American liberal, commie, lefty troll attempting to cause dissension. Thankfully, the vast majority of American's in your adopted country aren't as whacko.

Edit: Actually Pete, I'm only kidding, I was bit hard on you and I shouldn't do that. I don't care what your political persuasion or sexual orientation is. I'm sure you're basically a good guy and are really competent at some things, obviously though, history is not some thing you excel at. We all have our strengths and weaknesses. Example, my ex wife was a English professor and if I asked her to show me where, say, Argentina was on the world map she wouldn't have a clue. However, she could correctly spell every word in the dictionary.

Might just be the company I keep; but Aussie's of my aquaintence sure seem to have a lot of guns, and are as enthusiastic hunters and sport-shooters as any.

Heading back Down Under on Wednesday. If I couldn't live where I am, that's where I'd move.

Prove me wrong Pete.
Google Russian losses in WWII.
Their average daily loss, for years was 19,000. Yes nitwit, 19,000.

American losses on D-day 2,500. Iwo Jima, 26,000 casualties, 6,800 dead. In 36 days.

Had family involved in WWII, proud of what they did. And we live in a great country.

But don't embarrass them by showing your lack of knowledge.

It's a shame that Australian firearms law has become more restrictive for the law abiding gun owners. Still, I have a friend who hunts Axis deer over there from time to time and he has had no trouble or serious impediments put in his way.

We have a vocal minority here in NZ who are anti gun and get way too much attention by the media. They're your usual urbanite, liberal, types who haven't a clue about the wilderness or that just about every farm in this country (and there are a lot of farms) has at least one rifle or shotgun. They would love to see more restrictive firearms laws placed on us. They haven't a chance of succeeding though as we love our guns too much and we're too organized. Long may it remain so.

Well, some good news is that my wife received her Firearms Licence (A,B) notification today in the mail, photo on Thursday and then look about for a 1958 Brno model 5 for her, I already have a nice 1980's piece of Roger Vardy's walnut ready to be cut to fit her.

The 1958 Model 5, the best of all the Brno's ever made. Good luck with your project.

I don't think pete is a troll, I think he's just the real (ignorant) deal I just got back from Australia and New Zealand in February (cruise with wife) and loved it--hated the 15 hour flight from LA to Sydney, though. What you don't understand is that many Americans don't think that guns are for hunting and fun anymore. It's all about self defense for them. They live in a paranoid world where the Christian white man is threatened, even though that's who runs the country. Logic doesn't apply to them.

do you gentlemen understand the written law on firearms in America ? do you understand firearm laws how they differ in Australia,Canada ,England ,others and understand them ? Why would anyone ever continue to accept the firearm laws of Australia,Canada,England or any other country who denies that right to a lawful tax paying person to own and keep firearms at home for protection, hunting or target practice fun when they want to use them in a lawful manner?also private sales of legal firearms is private sales and should have remained that way in all countries. to many laws from government is a liberal thing that leads to socialism and that does not work well. some of you say Americans are not as free as I think ? well I can walk in any firearm store and buy a firearm and walk out with it in less than a half hour with ammo take it home and where I live lawfully shoot that firearm all day any day sunrise to sunset so in your country can you ? plus I can give that legal firearm as a gift to my son or daughter lawfully with no government paper work also . can you ? who`s more free ?

The gift that keeps on giving.

The National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS, is all about saving lives and protecting people from harm—by not letting guns fall into the wrong hands. It also ensures the timely transfer of firearms to eligible gun buyers.

Mandated by the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act of 1993 and launched by the FBI on November 30, 1998, NICS is used by Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) to instantly determine whether a prospective buyer is eligible to buy firearms. Before ringing up the sale, cashiers call in a check to the FBI or to other designated agencies to ensure that each customer does not have a criminal record or isn’t otherwise ineligible to make a purchase. More than 230 million such checks have been made, leading to more than 1.3 million denials.

NICS is located at the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division in Clarksburg, West Virginia. It provides full service to FFLs in 30 states, five U.S. territories, and the District of Columbia. Upon completion of the required Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Form 4473, FFLs contact the NICS Section via a toll-free telephone number or electronically on the Internet through the NICS E-Check System to request a background check with the descriptive information provided on the ATF Form 4473. NICS is customarily available 17 hours a day, seven days a week, including holidays (except for Christmas). Please be advised that calls may be monitored and recorded for any authorized purpose.

Of course I can except it only takes the time it takes to show my firearms license and hand the money over. I can use any firearm from sunrise until the next sunrise too. I also can own and buy any amount of sound moderators/suppressors/silencers without any questions asked or any paperwork and always have been able to. Can you?

..Yes, I can give away my entire gun collection lawfully to anyone who has a current relevant firearms license. Such a license is available to any citizen who undergoes a police background check, referee check and security check (all done at the same time of application and valid for 10 years unless revoked for serious crimes or firearm offences). The police cannot refuse a firearms license to any member of the public without a lawful reason to do so. I can own any amount of handguns, rifles, shotguns or military style semi auto's too. I should know as I work for the police in the department dealing with firearms. Handguns and some military semi's require an endorsement to the standard firearms license.

One is asked to "go out" if one is a prospect, one "goes to the pub" for a beer.

Translation:

1 = sore arse.
2 = few beers with mates.

Kind of pays to watch who you get drunk with.

Those creatures are found everywhere John, and it pays to keep a wary eye out for them.

Pete,
Do you know what Socialism is?
I bet you dont.
Do you know how socialist your country is. Bet you don't.
You enjoy the Socialism in your country everyday, oblivious to that fact.
And you even hope to become dependant on socialism one day. And you don't even know that.

Public owned, taxpayer funded anything, is in fact socialism.
It works better than pure capitalism, but, you don't understand that either.
Gun grabbing is more communist, but it's not a goal, just a side effect.

Taking guns with an aim to make a people subservient is actually Totalitarian.
But you didn't know that.
Or, what it is.

Now, there has not been a country that fit any of these pigeon holes in your lifetime.
They have been a combination of several.

Fascism was probably the purist system. Only because the definition is wrapped around the examples.
And experts don't really agree on what exactly Fascism is.

You are a dips hide calling me a liberal.
My post states fact. Unless you are going to forgo Social Security.
It does not show how I feel about those issues.

The fact that I am aware, of the information may give a hint.
