That is gorgeous. I really like the "in the white" look of the receiver, it makes a nice contrast. Case hardening would be an option bu I honestly don't know if it would improve the looks.
I'd also like to know who did that. Looks like they might be beyond my budget but it doesn't hurt to know.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!
I recently had a custom #1 built and had the metal case colored. I tried to post pics but technology and I don't get along very well. All the metal was done including rings, skeleton grip cap and metal but plate.
I got as far as getting the pictures to the image gallery but can't get them to here
I have no idea how these pics got here but there are pics of the receiver on the image gallery. I'm still trying to figure out how to do the pics. The smith is a local one Central Michigan Gunsmithing in Mt. Pleasant Michigan. The rifle sports a 24 inch tapered octagon barrel and is chambered in 7MM-08 and it's scary accurate.I went all out on this one custom quarter rib, case colored metal but plate, island swivels. Needless to say I'm very pleased. This smith has done a half dozen rifles and a Parker shotgun for me.
It helps to have two windows open with the campfire up in each one so you’re not going back and forth from the image gallery to your post but you can do that as well if you want.
1. In the image gallery, click on your picture to expand it. 2. Right click on the expanded pic to bring up a small menu, then click on “Copy Image Location” - that records the image link temporarily. 3. Go back to your post and use full editor. 4. Click on the Insert Image Link icon, 9th from the left next to the smiley face. 5. Put the cursor in the little window that comes up and hit Ctrl-V, or you can right click in it to bring up another menu and click on Paste. Holding the Ctrl Key down and then pressing V is the shortcut for paste - your image link will be inserted into that window. Don’t worry about the highlighted http://, you want to overwrite that anyway since it’s already included in the link you copied in step 2. 6. Click Ok and you will see the image link inserted in your post surrounded by .
And that’s it. Repeat as needed to put more pictures in. Once you do it a couple of times it really takes less time to do than it does to read these instructions.
Gunnery, gunnery, gunnery. Hit the target, all else is twaddle!
Thanks Jim. One of these days I'll get the picture posting figured out.
He send it out for the case color work out. I think its in Illinois but I'm not sure. I can find out if you wish. They have a pretty quick turn around time and have done several rifles of mine.
French grey would be nice but color case is awesome , I sent big sky pics of mine , I also had a K80 combo built for trap shooting , I built a LH 416 Rigby and you guessed it color case hardened. I can't get enough! Your 256 is awesome , COLOR CASE HARDEN YOU WONT BE SORRY😊
+ one for color case or french grey with the engraving highlighted.
If the 256 Newton had been a commercial success think how many fewer cartridges we would have now? Creedmoor no, 270 win. no, 260 rem no. 257 Bob probably but maybe not.

Ya, I might end up doing the french grey route...I already have a couple of color cased No. 1's, and I am having another one built, and I think the color might hide the engraving a little bit.
I think the french grey would indeed really accent it.
The only way the 256 Newton could be cooler is if it had a rim.
Beautiful! More pictures of either? Details on both...?
I tried to add another full view image of both rifles, but can't seem to conquer this site's overly complicated image system.
The Heym was produced by that German gunmaker in the 1980's, They imported Ruger actions and stocked and barreled them to European tastes. They were/are very pricey and the quality is top-notch. The drawback is the European scope mounting systems used. If the rifle doesn't come with a scope set-up (mine didn't :-( ), then you're looking at an expensive and time consuming effort to get a scope in it. This one is in 30-06, so cheap to shoot anyway. And they all came with Canjar triggers as standard equipment! I got this one in a trade with a friend who imported it a few years ago.
The custom gun is one the same friend had put together from parts by Mitch Schultz whose shop is right behind the Ruger factory. It has a non-prefix 222 barrel on a 131-prefix receiver with Circassian "30-06 Centennial edition" wood. And also had a Canjar set trigger that I recently replaced with a Kepplinger that I think fits the rifle better for size and appearance. The case colors on the receiver and lever were done by Turnbull, as previously stated.
I haven't had a chance to fire either one yet, winter being what it is here in the great white north downwind from one of the great lakes. . .

There we go, French gray, WTF that is. I don't know but I like it.
