Recoil. Muzzle blast. Inefficiency. Very expensive brass and ammo. Meat damage. Lack of common man rifles available. Barrel life. I could keep going...

The 30-06 is king and the standard by which all others are judged. The .308 can keep up with the 06 with 150 gr. pills. Falls off with 165's and 180's and higher fall real short of the 30-06... That being said there isn't an animal in the world that could tell the difference when shot in the chest with either.

Find one you like the best and don't overcomplicate it.

06, because I'm a fan.

What for?

30-06 because that's what i prefer.

I hunted with 30-06 for 40 years. I'll never say anything bad about it. But about 10 years ago picked up a 308. The 30-06 hasn't been hunting since.

Why?

My sub 6 lb scoped Kimber 308 has exactly the same recoil as my 7.5 lb 30-06. My 7.5 lb 308 has about 25% less recoil than the 30-06 and both are in more compact rifles.

With the best loads my 308 at 400 yards does exactly what the 30-06 does at 500 yards and a 300 magnum would do at 600 yards. I figure about 400 yards is as far as I have the skills to shoot.

I have one of each. The .06 gets pulled out when I want to use 220 gr bullets. The .308 when 165's come into play

Tikka might as well go '06, Kimber Montana, 308.

Not that it matters too much but.....short action vs long action??? And if you are going to shoot "3000" yds or so (I don't/won't) the 30-06 might have a bit of an advantage. For me now I can be a little more comfortable with a short action 308 and lightened up. I've had both and love them both. That's my which and why.

I would add it's the cartridge I started with, and the only reason I don't own a 308 is the last thing I "need" is another round to buy ammo or load for.

Depends on what you're hunting, where you're hunting. I've kilt deer dead with both.

I bought a new deer rifle a few years ago, and ended up with a Ruger Hawkeye stainless laminated in ... .308. A .30-06 would have fit the bill as well, but I already have an M1 Garand and didn't want to have high performance rounds about that could possibly end up in the Garand and bend an op rod.

From what I can tell, with standard factory loads there is really not much difference between the two. If you hand load, you can approach 7MM Rem Mag levels of performance with the .30-06. Not so with the .308. If I need to hunt something that requires more power than a .308 I have a .338 win mag.

The .308 and 30-06 are as close to each other as [bleep] is to swearing. Go with the one that makes your nipples hard, just on looks alone. Though in saying that, lots of Krauts and Japs hate the '06 for some reason..

Personally, I prefer a short action and less powder to burn.

I own two 30-06 and one 308. For me it would depend on the rifle action. For a Remington pump or a semi auto I'd go with the 06 since the receiver length is the same for both. For a bolt action I'd get the 308.

I vote 308. Shorter action with less recoil. There is a small advantage with the 30-06 with heavy bullets, but do not think a 308 cannot handle a heavy bullet. Penetration with a 200 grain bullet in a 308 is awesome.

I don't dig long actions.
With today's powders and projectiles the need for that little extra the 06 case brings to the party is insignificant.
If I need more I'll move to a larger caliber. If I need anything I'll ootfor a Magnum of smaller caliber.

As others have asked, what would it be used for?
My first "deer rifle" was a 06 and was my only for almost 20 years. Found out somewhere along the way I prefer short actions and I dont hunt anything bigger than white tails so 308 would get my vote.

I've pocket-book voted for the .30-06 about six times now and have four in the safe.

I've also voted for the .308 four times now. Two got sold, a Ruger GSR and AR remain.

Doesn't really matter. Buy one and go hunting.

My eyes hurt after reading that

I have both.I have to say,though they are close,the 30-06 seems to strike with way more authority.That extra 100-200ft per second of velocity I get with my 30-06 over my 308 just seems like way more than that when I shoot a deer.Bigger exit wound when same bullet is used,DRT kills are the norm with te 30-06,on the other hand,most deer I shoot with the 308 run a ways before they die.

Shot a 30/06 for 25 years , killed tons of deer with it. Load data on the box of Federal I used most of those years said 2910 fps for 150 gr. Ballistic Tip. This was a few years back and I believe quite easily achieved with 308 with new powders now .

Having both I chose the 06! In my case it's the rifle that makes the choice! Mauser action 06 vs Remington action .308. I could care less about action length!

Action length shouldn't really be a concern, unless you are a short bastid like stick. Then a 1/2" might make all the difference in the world. I like Brad's answer, even though we all know he's a 308 guy, as is mathman. We also know both cartridges work well on big game. Some of us started out on one or the other, so we may have personal bias influencing our opinions and choices. I say, use what works for you and quit squabbling over which one "you" think is best....

The '06 shoots flatter and you can load the 200 gr Partition without worrying about limiting powder capacity due to magazine length constraints or throat length. If I want a short action the 7mm-08 gets the nod over the .308.

At least one of each......both will drop lots of critters with proper shot placement............range of bullet weights will broaden with both.........both use the same size cleaning brushes and jags which simplifies one's life..........which also allows one to add 300s to the mix.

As simple as his answer was Dye has it right, it really does not matter yet all of us have agonized many hours over this decision. I started out 308, decided 30-06 was more versatile, got homesick for 308, went back to that for a while, now i use both interchangeably depending on what rifle I decide to use that day. My older, wiser friends have simplified their lives and just picked one and used the time they spent agonizing over this decision to do more important things like try to remember where they left their keys or cell phone.

I've got both, and shot big deer with both. Both performed well.

I've vowed that my last 30-06 was my last. I've got 8. I really don't need another.

308 WIN? Look, I've only got one. Currently. I've got waaay more brass than that. I'll probably buy another 308 WIN when I can figure out a niche to fill. I'm also going to have grandchildren coming on line. Probably a 308 WIN will be in my future just so I have something to pass along.

In general, I would say that for an average whitetail deer hunter, both will work nearly interchangeably. I prefer 30-06 for my longer venues and 308 WIN for the shorter.

If the number of rifles owned tells the tale then yes, I'm definitely a 308 guy. But for a while now I've been itching to get a 30-06 put together.

308 for those dainty fellars who have neither the endurance to carry the extra two ounces or the arm strength to pull a bolt back an extra 1/2 inch. 30-06 for the rest of us.

Unless you want to shoot heavier bullets than 165s, are hung up on short actions, or worried about a couple of ft-lbs of recoil, they look like functional equivalents to me in the real world and its a coin flip. I know no deer is ever going to know the difference. I've never killed an elk or a moose but people kill em with .308's all the time.

I think for me it would depend on the rifle. If I were going the ultra light route I'd probably go .308 just to maximize the concept. In an M77 or equivalent, I'd probably go 30-06 to maximize the versatility and horsepower. In the varmint/tacticool class, its gonna be .308 unless you do a custom because that is what the factories chamber in those kind of rifles.

My two BRNO ZG-47 are 30-06.
Don`t need anything else.

But if I ever choose another action, the choice would be 308.
Just because its less recoil for the bullet weighst I need.

I have both. Did a little experiment a few years back. Shot and chronographed some Winchester 180 gr. Power Point ammo in .308 and 30-06.
The .308 did 2610 FPS and the 30-06 did 2630 FPS. WOW! Big whoopie!

Another experiment was with the .308 and the 220 gr. Sierra round nose bullet. Chronograph read 2310 FPS and the group was .375" Two more groups of three shots never had a group larger that .60" and the velocities were within 15 FPS of the first set. IIRC, advertised velocity for the 220 gr. bullet in the 30-06 was 2400 FPS. Never could find a box of 220 30-06 ammo to run over the Chrony.

Current .308 is a Ruger tanger RSI with 18.5" barrel. Pet load is the 165 gr. Speer Hot Core at 2550 FPS. I've killed deer just fine out to 250 yards with that load.

Pet 30-06 is an FN Mauser, 24" barrel 1 in 12" twist that shoots bug holes with the 165 gr. Nosler Accubond at 2880 FPS and kills elk just fine.

I don't think my 308 can even get close to these velocities no matter what powder I'd but in it.Usually about 2700fps or so is the best I can get in it.

Beauty of the 308 Win - light rifles, low recoil, 20" pipes giving great velocity, 400 yards in
good hands can easily slay 1000 lbs critters. As a hunter what more can you ask.

If your hunting game smaller than elk there is no real world difference between .308 or 30-06. So go with the lighter less kicking .308. If you're hunting elk size game or larger do the animal a favor and step up to a .338 win mag of larger and do it right. If you can't handle the kick of the .338 win mag then you probably can't handle all the other things that go with hunting game >= elk.

30-06, because with 180 partitions it starts to show some distance, atleast in my biased mind.

Have owned 308's and in my mind the advantage is either:
A- the rifle you want is better suited for a SA, like a Kimber.

or

B- the particular scope you have a penchant for requires odd-ball mounts to use on a LA. Scopes seem to be getting shorter and shorter, especially stuff in the 2-7 range which I prefer.

Truthfully if going the SA route for one of the reasons above, I'd opt for a 7mm-08.

You have previously stated that you liked the short bolt throw on your Ruger 77 in 6mm. That will be duplicated by the 308. Stop overthinking it.

Further, both are great 30 caliber hunting rounds. Nearly everyone I know who starts with a 30-06 migrates to the 308 as they get into middle age and beyond. It's the smarter person's choice.

Only reason to get a 30-06 is if you are going to go with a pre-64 Winny.

I own six .06's bolt action rifles and three .308 bolt actions. I don't feel strongly one way or another except that if i was shooting an M1 Garand I would choose the .30-06 and if I was shooting the M-14 or M1A Springfield Armory I would choose the .308.

I like the 30-06 but this is my go-to right down to the bullet I use.

If limited to factory ammo, there is no practical difference. IMO, this is because of conservative loading for the 06. If habdloading, the 06 pulls away, particularly with heavier bullets.. I shoot both, and hunt with both. Just my .02.

I either need to drink more or drink less to understand.

308 because I like my short action light rifles when the terrain is steep and hiking is far. The only time the 06 would get the nod is when heavier bullets are warranted...which isn't often...kinda never in the lower 48.

I first started hunting with a .308 in 1964. Over the years, I have killed a lot of elk with that cartridge, and never felt that it was in any way inadequate for the task. Oh well-everyone's experience in these matters is a little different. CP.

I like my Rem. Carbine .308. It's very accurate with either 150 or 165gr bullets, plus I like the shorter stroke. The 06 auto gets used occasionally.

this is a head game for me, and i need to make it reality - i need to shoot more at 400 meters to 500 meters and have absolute confidence in whatever bullet is shooting good groups, from whatever rifle i have is putting them there... it just has to be a bone busting bullet, because i just know the only shot i will get is an odd angle one, at the limits of my ability with that rifle and scope.

Either cartridge will do with stout 150 gr - TTSX, AccuBond, Partition; or step up to 165 gr class in TSX, Accubond, Partition or A-Frame. All will kill elk way out there if your abilities are up to the task. At 500 yards/meters you are certainly challenging your skills to a greater level with both cartridges, but that is remedied again by your skill and good rifle optics. Certainly a 7mm, .30 or .338 magnum can make it somewhat easier with 150 gr-160 gr; 165 gr-180 gr; and 210 gr-225 gr., again it's all about the operator and less about the materials and equipment. One can't ever discount the advantage of getting as close to the animal as possible before pulling the trigger, but apparently it is less in vogue these days.

For me its .308 because

1. I don't need to make real long shots with it.
2. I could get it in a short action custom compact Winchester 70 Rifle that doesn't weigh much.
3. Its cheap to reload for.
4. Its easy to reload for.
5. It kills just as well as most other 30 caliber cartridges at under 300 yards.
6. Did I say it was light and easy to carry?

If I was to buy a new to me short action rifle to replace my 10-twist 243, it'd be a lightweight 7-08, 6.5 Creed, or a 9-twist 243.
I guess I'd take a .308 also though. I've had a lightweight .308 before, and even with no recoil pad and 180's it doesn't hurt. But it'd be my fourth choice.
It'll be an opportunistic impulse buy regardless.

If I was to buy a long action rifle, it'd be a 30-06.
Because there's no better value on the used rifle market than a 30-06. And aside from a 30-30 or a 45-70, no other centerfire big game rifle cartridge represents American history better. Also, a 30-06 was my first centerfire rifle, so there's that sentimental value thing.
Since I don't hunt elk, or really have a need for the power of a 30-06, probably have to get some 168 TSX and try and get a trophy hog to justify it.
Always thought a wild boar made one of the coolest mounts.

For me, the 308. Mostly because of the short action rifles it is available in-my favorite being the Kimber M84.

30-06 it can handle heavier bullets better

308 gets the call for me these days. I've had at least one 06' for the past 40 years but rarely used it as I preferred a 270win. A few years ago I got a 308. Gave my 270 to a grandson and now I use a 308 for whitetails, hogs, and an elk (in 2016). I did use the 06 for my elk this year but will probably use a 308 next year. Either cartridge works for me, but I'm liking the 308 for now.

.308 because I prefer short actions, .308s are very easy to get to shoot well, and for me, the 30-06 has noticeably more recoil without a noticeable increase in performance.

This is close to my experience w/the 06 & 308 also.

I never shoot factory ammo -- esp for hunting.
