In most areas I've hunted elk, in eastern Oregon, the veg is denser enough than that to form a solid canopy impenetrable to vision from afar. That'd be pretty cool, to be able to see them on hillsides that far away. That being said I'm considering buying an OTC Roosevelt elk tag this year and giving that a try. That's basically a Coast Range hunt. THICK, steep, muddy, wet..... the reason being, I saw a stud male elk a few days ago when I bailed down a logging road to test a new Glock 19 on my way to a deer hunt. Never saw the head/horns but it was a BIG, well-muscled, clearly male elk. I don't *think* Rosies move around near as much as Rocky Mountain elk so it might be valuable intel to know where one is making its general AO.... maybe. If I do it I'll snap a pic of the jungle.

there are places you can look out for sure, unfortunately the elk seem like they only visit those places in the dark got Tiny Elvis out for 3 miles this afternoon; I've gone north of 1500 miles for year

At least you got in to them. I haven't seen an elk since opening day, but i've gotten a lot of exercise. I'm hoping the storms moving through south central MT will get them moving and start to push them down.

New to this thread, just got back a couple weeks ago from my first backpack hunt, 5 days in Gunnison National Forest for Elk 2nd rifle. Loved every second. When the dream began in June I was 247 lbs. 208 now. Me and my hunting partner hit the gym every morning. Did biceps and back this morning, and then sprinted 1/2 mile on the treadmill. Love it.

Combined a morning hog hunt with a semi workout today, put a 50 lb sack of sand in my Kifaru and hiked a mile in the woods up and down mild hills with my hunting partner who did the same.
