MH,

I must have gotten a bunch of bad batches from KG then. I prep EXACTLY as they recommend, use K-Phos, and bake as they recommend. I have never had one single batch that would hold up as well, or was as hard as Cerakote.

I will try and find some pics of a test I did coating a couple bolts with Cerakote and a couple botls with KG, then comparing durability. Cerakote won by a mile.

I also have not noticed that Cerakote has a short shelf life compared to KG. In fact, all of the KG products save the gloss products use a flattenign paste in them that settles to the bottom rather quickly. If you leave it there for any length of time (much over a month), you really need to take the can to a professional paint shop and have them shake it up with one of their vibrators to ensure no clumping and consistent flatness.

I've not tried the newest KG stuff, but given my experience with their other products, I'm not too interested.

Duracoat is pretty darn good too, though it has an entirely different feel and hardness than Cerakote.

My thoughts are KG Gunkote does not reach its full cure when it is brought out of the oven. Ditto for Duracoat. Some folks say it really reaches that ceramic hardness a year later. I dunno, I always bake KG GunKote an extra hour or so. Joe Fazio said it does not hurt a thing.........

I might add my experience is only with the KG GunKote 2400 series.

30-06 SPR
Rem 700 BDL
G.A. Precision Bolt stop/release
Rock #4, 24", 1-in-11 twist
Tuned factory trigger - 3 lbs.
Oversize lug
Pillar bedded and free-floated into
McMillan Rem. Classic - brown flame
1" Pachmayr Decelerator @ 13.75 LOP
Williams bottom metal
Action, bbl. and bottom metal Cerakoted matte black
Bolt fluted by Kampfeld Customs (thanks Karl)
Burris mounts
Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40
9 lbs.

Assembled by GA Precision

Lessons learned: For other newbies, make sure you do your homework and push back is something doesn't sound right. I was not after a light rifle to begin with (just wanted a pleasant shooter that would steady nice). I specified that the rifle was to weigh no more than 7.5 pounds clean (it was on the order sheet, typed by George himself), it came in at closer to 8. I voiced my concern with George during the spec'ing of this rifle that I thought the #4 Rock at 24" would come in heavy. He was quick to say that the weights displayed on Rock's website were only rough estimates and to trust him. In addition, I requested a 2.5 lb. trigger pull. not a 3 lb. as it turned out. I can live with the trigger and don't feel like debating this with George after a 6 month wait. BTW, the McMillan flame did not turn out even remotely like a flame.

Having said all that, I can't wait to take it hunting next season. I might ultimately have the barrel fluted if I get tired of the weight (assuming I can have this #4 fluted). I wanted 24" vs. 22" for maybe a little more velocity, but most would probably argue 22" would be better. I realize a lighter scope and Talley Lightweights would also bring it down.

I'm staying local on the next one - Karl Kampfeld will get my business.

DB,

Still a pretty nice rifle, lots of potential in the weight savings dept.

Flute the barrel like you posted.

Skip the heavy recoil lug and opt for the factory pot metal if you want to save weight next time, maybe go Williams Ti bottom metal if Matt is producing them.

I like Lilja's sporter contours #2- #4 for most of my projects now, very trim but still accurate.

It could be lighter if I flute bolt, Talley lightweights, 3.5-10x40 etc. But it actually came out exactly as planned.........

I don't always venture out into the sub-freezing darkness, but when I do, it is deer hunting season, and I carry a Remington. Stay hungry my friends.
