Is it possible to convert a lever lock safety rifle to a tang safety by swapping a couple of parts and milling a slot? I can't find any good photos of the internals of a tang safety rifle.

I'm sure it could be done, but as said above the cost may be so close to the price of another 99 that it may not be worth it - given you could find all of the parts. Years ago there was a company that offered tang safety conversions for the 99, but finding a used or NOS kit may prove very tough.

Well, I have access to a machine shop and I'm reasonably handy, my biggest problem at this point is that I can't find any decent photos of the internals of a tang safety model to see if I could copy it. If someone could post or email me pictures of the trigger/safety assembly that would be appreciated.

I got this rifle for $340, if anyone wants to trade me for a tang safety model I'm game wink

The price was cheap enough and performing your own work certainly puts it in the realm of doable. I don't have a tang safety 99 but you probably can find a schematic on the Gun Parts/Numerich Arms web site.

crap, I felt like being more helpful... check out the photos here. Almost all pics are of the same conversion system.... one is different, the one showing a lever safety on both sides.... these kits are probably very difficult to find not already installed on a gun though I do have one still in a box that could be added to a 99 but I am NOT interested in selling it as I have plans for it...though guns with this system do come for sale on a fairly regular basis.

Thanks, lovemy99, that looks about like what I'd want to do. Aside from inletting does it require any alterations?

It's an E in .308, I got it from the classifieds here right after Christmas. If you search for the posting by 300jimmy it may still be up with the pictures linked. It came to me without stocks so I got an unfinished set from gunstocksinc for it.

Why would it need a new lever? Just because the tang safety model doesn't use the lever lock notch?

tang safety engages a nub on the bow of the lever and blocks the trigger
heck, the wife hasn't put me to work at anything but taking stitches out of our dog today so maybe i will pull one of each type apart and take pictures and post them here just for s&g's

I would never put the effort into converting a lever safety to a tang safety. Money wasted.

Either trade the gun for a tang safety (plenty available), or buy a 2nd with a tang. Considering you have a 99E, while it may shoot great, pretty much any other 99 is going to be an upgrade with a walnut stock. Find yourself a 99F, 99DL, or even a late straight stock 99A. Better gun, no money wasted.

here are pictures of what you would have to do.

plus relieve areas of the butt stock to clear the new parts.

So it looks like the factory tang safety uses completely different trigger/sear components. Interesting.

Okay, I disagree here if the gun is a premil... its like trying to convert a right hand drive Jag to a left hand drive... not worth the cost but kinda understandable... buying a postmil (okay, most post mils) would be more like buying a left hand dive pinto b/c Jag didn't make a left hand drive.

Please accept "absurd" as my entry into a-euphemism-for-this-idea contest.

That is all.

No you will just need to inlet the stock behind the upper tang and also along the side of the lower tang by the factory lever safety. You would not need a new lever.
