The 77 RL was built on a long action, so you can load the cartridge to a longer COAL and take advantage of a fractional gain in powder capacity.
I have a 77 MK2 RSI parts gun in 257 Roberts and like to shoot 110 grain ABs.

Another vote for the 77UL, but I am definitely biased towards older Rugers.

Here's a good one. Three 257 Roberts rifles showed up over the weekend at the local gun shop. All used. Just about mint Ruger 77UL, 20" barrel w/no sights, w/factory rings-$699, Rem 722 open sights but drilled and tapped for scope, 24" barrel, maybe 85%-$599, and another Rem 722, open sights, also drilled and tapped for scope, also 24" barrel-maybe 70% honest wear-$499.
What to do? I'm going to go buy one in the morning, but which one? Hunt in northern MN and WI woods.
Somebody throw me a bone here - tell me what I can't outright see...I already own a very accurate 257 Browning BLR, shooting 117 Fed Premiums.
Ruger sounds a bit high, $550 maybe........Don't know about the 722s......Which one did you buy? My choice would be:

I would offer them a little less for the Ruger. However, that rifle in a common cartridge where I'm at would be 5-550, so if the rifle is in really nice shape they probably are not too far off so IMO 550 might be as low as they go.

CRJ1960 Did you do any tweaking to the RL? Such as bedding, floating, trigger, etc???? Tim

I bought a 257 Roberts 722 as my deployment present to myself after my second afg rodeo. From a guy in Texas. It shoots 120 partition federal premium +p into a clover leaf. Killed a lot of deer and couple pigs a bear some coyotes with it. Built a model 7 Rob here last couple years that I always hunt with now- and would buy a 77 mkII ul next to round out my collection if I were that way. It would be my Goto local rifle. Robs

I have owned two Rugers in 257 Roberts. I sold the UL model before I ever shot it. The other rifle was a standard M77 with 22" barrel. It shot very well, but had an extremely long throat. I used it woodchuck hunting and had to shoot 100 grain bullets to get near the rifling. It is a long action. The Remington 722 is a short action, and not nearly as good looking as the Ruger 77UL. I shot a 722 in 257 a bit in developing some loads for a shooting buddy. It was a very accurate rifle. For deer hunting in the woods, I would go for the Ruger. Let us know what you do.

Have a 722. Very accurate. It won't leave. I'm an old gun guy anyway though.

If it were a Ruger it would have to be a tang safety model, I detest the later style safety. Years ago I passed up a Remington 722B, they sure put nice wood on those deluxe models. My choice if I were to buy another .257 Roberts would be a 722B.

Mule Deer restocked his 722 in 257 Roberts with 700 Mountain Rifle stock, which prompted me to do the same.

I don't do pictures, but I think that Mule Deer has posted pictures of his in the past. Putting a 722 into a 700 stock isn't hard, but you have to do some inletting for the tang, bolt handle, and the rear sight barrel boss. Since my 257 Roberts went into a 700 MR stock, I had to buy bottom metal, a magazine box, magazine spring, and follower. I did another in 25-284, a 257 Roberts barrel set back one full turn and rechambered, in a 700 BDL stock using a SAUM magazine box and follower.

The Ruger came home with me. Two used Rem 722 in 257 Robt's remain on the shelf at Ahlman's Guns, Morristown, MN.

I like Remington’s. The 722’s usually have a very low comb. I’ve said the same thing about Rugers, though they are not as low. The 257 isn’t a kicker so a slap in the face won’t be coming with either. On the 722’s, 721’s and 77’s I’ve owned, I replaced the stocks for a better sight picture - for a scope.
It’s been my experience that the Remington’s will be more accurate. Though I had a very accurate heavy barrel 280 Ruger 77.
The 257 is a very nice cartridge. Can you see the rifling well? Dad had shot out the barrel on his 257 Roberts Mauser, it’s possible that may be true with these. If all things are equal buy the 77 and one of the 722’s and sell the one you like the least.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally
