im ordering a knight ultra lite and i am confused if i should shoot the blackhorn 209 powder out of it because im going to keep the full plastic jacket primer set up and everywhere i look everyone has converted it to the bare primer ignition and i just cant find anyone that has the full plastic jacket set up and iv read a lot of people having problems with it igniting and im just looking to have an accurate and reliable muzzleloader for the hunting season here in Maryland but if its not a very reliable powder ill just keep shooting the pyrodex i just want to change it and start shooting something that burns cleaner and this stuff sounds awesome but not if it doesn't want to go boom when i pull the trigger

Another alternative with increasing sales every year, is Aliant Black Mag MZ loose powder.

You've pretty much answered your own question. If you want to shoot BH209, then order your Ultra Lite with the bare 209 primer option to get reliable ignition. Otherwise, stick with one of the other substitutes if you're going with the Full Plastic Jacket..I don't know why you'd want to keep the Full Plastic Jacket setup and limit yourself.

I was just wondering if anyone else shoots with the full plastic jacket with success. I like the idea of the plastic jacket so i will probably keep it but i also like the blackhorn powder and if i dont like it i can always change it over later. I just dont know what powder to shoot if you have any suggestions that would be fantastic. And why does the plastic jacket cause such an issue in the first place??

I use Blackhorn 209. I use a Lehigh conversion system with Hot Federal 209A primers. Check out Lehigh. It shoots great and never fails to go bang. I'd can the plastic jacket priming system.

I have a couple guns that use full plastic jackets and I shoot them "with success", but not with Blackhorn 209. Curious, what your attraction is to the FPJ? I get it that it's larger and easier to handle than a bare primmer, but it's no more weather proof and won't provide the ignition to light BH209 with 100% reliability. It does not seal the breach as well as a properly fitting bare 209 and it will not contain the blow by from the primer or the blow back from the main charge. That said, take you choice of the other subs, they'll all work. I've used most that have come along, they all have their quirks. Pyrodex is as dirty as real BP and harder to light, I don't like it. Triple 7 gives good velocity per grain but can cause a fouling "crud ring" that makes cleaning and loading difficult. I've tried the IMR White Hots and they worked well and cleanup was easy. The American Pioneer products I've tried worked ok but don't seem to be as consistent as others. I'm still pretty new to BH209 but there are legions that swear by it now. One of the best I've used, Black Mag 3, is no longer produced. One I haven't tried yet is the aforementioned Alliant Black MZ. It has good reviews and I'll probably try some one of these days for my plunger type guns.

I like Triple 7 for what I need - in 300ish rounds fired, no failures, even with “old” powder/pellets from prior years.

I support a Wounded Warriors program with 8-12 Knights of varying vintage, but all with the red plastic jackets. My personal Knight has the LeHiegh conversation, but I bought it that way. We use the red jackets for safety - easy to see and validate the loading condition, easier for warriors with mobility issues to handle, and an easier method for the warriors to handle/store the primers.

With Triple 7 and the jackets, we run about 200-250 rounds through the guns between sight-in, training the warriors, zero-validation, and the hunt. We see the crud ring, but it hasn’t been a hunt stopper. Yes, it adds a bit the cleaning needs, but we are doing enough rifles at once that it’s barely a bump on the timeline. We are seeing 8-10 shots average per gun before we have to go through the bore with patch. If the rifle bore is rough, that may drop the difference between swaps to 5 shots. I’ve got a couple of older LK-93 rifles that were abused a bit.

We used Pyrodex ( a donation from a supporter) once at one range session, it fired fine, but the difference in fouling and cleaning was way more of a workload, IMHO.

.... as well as a few Periods?

I ran the red full plastic jacket set up and swapped it for the bare primer plug. Ignition is now better (no more hangfires), despite a little more blowback around the primer area - which doesn't bother me when cleaning my Knight Vision.
