My brother inlaw gave me an AR 15 lower, complete, as a gift.
What 17 cal cartridge feeds best out of these, I might go ahead and finally get an upper for the rig for hunting coyotes for fur.
What ol you say.?

The little 17 Remington feeds and functions just fine in an AR, it also kills bigger than it should given the right bullet,
That said, I'm more partial to the 204 Ruger for coyote and cats. But if Berger started running 30 grain jackets again, a 17 might find it's way back in my safe.

I put a 17 Remington barrel on an AR15 for a guy when I worked in a gunshop in AK. He was from SE AK and said he’d worn out a Rem700 in the same chambering and was going to the AR as it had been given to him. He claimed to have killed dozens of deer with his old 700, as well as plenty of wolves and countless foxes. I know another guy who killed 18 wolves and 8 caribou with a 700 in 17Rem. I don’t think you’ll have any problem killing coyotes with one if you stick to the 25gr Hornady, I don’t with mine anyway.

Don't spend all your money in one place. Hold enough back for a good Geissele trigger for that lower. And take a little time to think about the caliber that will benefit you the most. There are many more than you might realize, to even include those utilizing the WSSM cases for much more speed and power. It all comes at a price but with a good lower with a good trigger you can swap uppers out at will.

Thanks guys.!
The one thing about this build is that it will have to be as close to "ideal" as possible to running the "perfect" cartridge/bullet combination for Eastern coyotes. Sure, I'll hunt other coyotes, but it seems that the Eastern is a good deal larger than what we have in the west.
That starts to get a little specific when you factor that these will be hunted for fur. I have to guard against splash and not have an exit. That is the critera. That said, and in the time I've posted, I have heard excellent results of the simlpe ol 223 rem pushing 40gr NBT's. Reports indicate that this comlination is performing and meeting that critera.

I killed a small buck deer and got a pass through on the chest using the 40 NBT in a 223 AR. Just food for thought

I don't think a few pounds bigger Eastern version makes difference. Guys have been hammering coyotes for years all over with 17's of various flavors. The 17 is your best shot at killing without an exit.

Yep, 204 next best bet.
Cousin has killed 150 lb pigs with his 17 Remington. Shouldn’t bounce off any coyote if you stay off the ball joint.
