We have a Pilot and it has been a great vehicle. Lots of room and no repairs needed to date. It is not the most macho vehicle in the world but it has served us very well.

A 15 SR5 4x4 followed me home today. 35000 miles. About 25% under the price of a new one. Got to add remote start. I drove a 15 Pilot 4x4, totally unimpressed.

If you're really going to be off road much, it's a no brainer...............4-Runner. The other 2 are not serious off road vehicles.

I don't do much off road but, I like stuff that works when you need it to. Pilot 4x4 seems okish as a traction assist on a slick spot in the road. Didn't like the idea if I needed 4x4, REALLY didn't like the ride and road noise.

We have a couple of 4Runners in the neighborhood and no doubt they would be better off road than either of the other two because the Toyota is built on a truck frame. That said I was talking with a guy yesterday with a 4Runner and he said that his rides stiff and even with the big 6 cylinder engine he said that his gas mileage is only in the 20-22 mpg range. The owner down the street with th V-8 4Runner likes his rig, but doesn't like the gas mileage. If you Google both the Toyota and the Honda, the Honda gets a higher rating and 20% better gas mileage and the Subaru is likely better yet. If you already have a 4x4 for off roading, the Honda is the better family grocery getter.
My other auto is a .45

My wife has a 13 outback she bought new and now has 105k miles on it. She loves it. Me not so much. It's used oil from the start to the point I raised hell about it enough for them to do a consumption study. At the end they said it was within normal range at QT and a half between changes every 7K. I still think that is excessive. Also head light bulbs are very difficult to get to and change along with problems with window seals. I wouldn't have one.

Toyota 4 runner and not even close
Maintenance alone will be a big difference. NO timing belt on the Toyo, Subarus at least in my experience (2 of them) are not in Toyo class for reliablity.

You have a good one. Most use a quart every 1,000 miles and Subaru says that is not excessive.

Subaru has a reputation for advertising to the queers but that doesn't make it a bad car. It's a darn good one. They'll hold up well over 200k. I think that reputation was earned back before they abandoned non-interference valve trains and embraced all the Lefty crap. I bought a 2010 Impreza and when I took it in for its first timing belt, I was advised that the head gasket was a ticking time bomb, at 100,000 miles! WTF! My ex ended up with it, and fortunately wrecked it before the bomb went off, which would have cost about 3-4K to fix, according to my dealer. She got enough money to put her in a nice Honda. The Impreza had been making all kinds of weird noises before the wreck, so much so that her co-workers commented on it. No more Burus for me.
What fresh Hell is this?
