The Game Comission shot a sickly deer on a friends family farm about a month ago, confirmed CWD.
Now they have net traps set up there, trying to catch the deer.
Pretty tight mouthed about what they are doing with the deer they catch.
With what I understand about the dieseas, I would think the would kill and dispose on
location, to keep from spreading it.

But, I never understand anything they do.

Do you know IF they have imported Elk into the area ?

I ask because in Ark they began importing Elk from Co. in the early 80s-- our first Elk hunt was for 20 permits by drawing in 1998.
Those and other Elk were released in N C Ark, near Jasper Ar. In the meantime the Elk have flourished and spread out.

Unless I'm mistaken our FIRST case was diagnosed Feb/March 2016. I haven't checked lately on exact numbers but MORE deer have been diagnosed than Elk--- however the CORE area of CWD is STILL in the vicinity of the imported ELK.

Thankfully SO FAR the disease has NOT spread even across N Ark and NO cases that I'm aware of have been found in S Ark.
Yes, it has spread from that immediate area but not across ALL of N Ark.

To date, I've never heard of a successful effort to eradicate the disease. I believe the prions can exist for decades in the soil.

That's my understanding as well. WherEVER CWD has been it STILL is.

The best they can do is 'curtail' or minimize the spread.

I'll check with AGFC to see what the latest stats are.

Not sure if there are any Elk in that area, there used to be some on a farm between Jackson and Vicksburg. Just recently 2 men pled guilty to importing live white tails to a high fence operation in Lamar County that’s about 140 or so miles from where this case was found. Some of the deer they brought in from PA were from a herd known to have CWD.

Game and fish was asking for hunters in Lamar county to have their deer tested this season.

Got this from AGFC per Elk.....

"Statewide Elk Hunt Information
Any hunter outside of Boone, Carroll, Madison, Newton and Searcy counties who sees an elk while legally hunting for deer may take that elk with a limit of one, either sex per year."

Even now they are FOCUSED on 5 (Five) counties for the core of CWD.

Ark has 75 Co.s There are many Co.s surrounding those 5 and Elk have been seen - I don't know about killed - outside of those 5.

Haven'f found the stats yet. I'll add when I find them.

Yes it’s too bad. With as many deer as we have in Mississippi I don’t understand the high fence operations. In the 70s and early 80s you had to hunt just to see a deer, nowadays they are everywhere.

Here We Go -- From AGFC

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Positive CWD cases found as of January 8, 2018

County CWD-positive Deer CWD-positive Elk Total Cases
Benton 2 0 2
Boone 32 0 32
Carroll 41 0 41
Madison 17 0 17
Marion 4 0 4
Newton 229 *** 9 238 ***
Pope 2 0 2
Searcy 3 5 8
Sebastian 1 0 1
Washington 1 0 1

Total 332 14 346
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Note: Newton Co. - where Jasper Ar is./ has the LARGEST numbers of Elk & Deer with CWD. First Discovered - First Elk Imports.

The best I can describe this area's location is:

North Central ->-> toward N W Ark. The Southern most county listed is Pope. It lies N--> S and I 30 crosses the Southern portion of Pope Co.

Sorry Guys, I edited and 'columned' the stats but they wold NOT post orderly.

You probably right.

I'd be curious how they "dispose" of the carcasses. FIre won't destroy the prions.

Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease is the human variant. Steralizing surgical instruments is a problem as autoclaving won't destroy the prion. Fortunately it's rare.

I would guess that CWD could have been brought into Mississippi just as easily with a dead deer that someone just tossed the bones from.

Concentration of prions seems to be a key issue. That's why they no longer feed bone meal. If prions in bone meal are consumed by cattle, and their bones used for bone meal, you can see how there could be concentration of prions.

Higher population concentrations of deer/elk can cause problems.

Without concentration of the disease entity, these problems seem to dissipate.

I would like to know what deer farm. There was one here that sold to high fence operations, in the last year or so, they were found to have CWD. Some agency came in and took their whole herd. Damn shame in a way.

The had a mulched path the whole way around the place, and a parking area. It was real close to us, going over there and walking around the place was a treat for the girls.

I learned a lot about seeing, and not seeing deer at that place. It was mostly wooded, no browse all eaten down, just hills and valleys trees, standing and a fair number down.

Anyway, you could stand at the fence looking out over about 7 acres. You would immediately see maybe 6-10 deer. After awhile, a head or tail would move, and there would be a deer you hadn't seen. After 10 or so minutes you would be looking at 20+ deer, and still finding more. It always amazed me how they were "hidden"in plain sight in relatively open terrain. No wonder I bump deer in normal woods

Incinerating the deer will kill the prion, cooking the meat does not.

Don't panic, your deer herds will survive.

I passed a fenced in Elk Enclosure in Norwood Co many years back. There must have been a few infected since they were obviously distressed. Some were walking backwards and flopping around, not a pretty sight.

Here's an article I found on line. www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/science/chronic-wasting-disease-deer-elk-prions.html

Fire has to be pretty hot to kill prions, one source said 900*F.

Just burning a carcass may not get that hot. An incenterator would.

Infected animals shed a good bit of material, even burning infected ground won't kill them all, kills plants that may harbor them.

As I posted earlier, it has a lot to do with concentration of prions, infected animals, to have an outbreak.
